Removing trailing slash in <A element

Does anybody know if this could be fixed?
Browsers are automatically adding a trailing slash to this type of URLs:
    news://8788365112506@newsgroups.comcast.net

Although the source code is without trailing slashes:
    <A HREF="news://a535b$4569219e$54697c62$7238@cache10.multikabel.net">Download</A>

Is this possible to be fixed?
Maybe this could be done with CSS or JavaScript?
    Many thanks in advance!

A URI is assumed to comprise certain parts: a protocol, a host name, and a path. If you omit the protocol, most browsers will insert http by default. Browsers can't guess at the host name, for obvious reasons, but some will automatically add www. and .com. If the path is not specified, / is assumed (root directory).
