    crackpots ruining forums

hey there, i have a prob

three out of my five top posters are hurting my forums. I have a mature science development forum.

One, acts like a five year old and obviously has major cultural differences

The other two post crackpot theories and reply to others with radical ideas that break basic rules of physics and are obviously wrong. The cause alot of grief with my members who know physics and I think some have left because they are sick of battling them. What should I do!?!? I can't hinder the freedom of speech, but they post alot and are hurting thr forum.

You can contact them and tell them how it is - while you appreciate their participation, if they are blatantly posting incorrect material, that is not condoned. If they don't oblige, then ban them. Even if it makes your forum less active, it will be better for you and your users in the long run. I'd rather have less posting with quality emphasized than more with little quality.

    500 Server Error

I remember a funny story from a few years ago where the guy who owns photo.net (Phillip Greenspun) had a trouble maker on his forums. So he just scripted the forums to return a 500 Server Error to that user who eventually gave up and went away.

    people browsing???

You also have to think about the people browsing the forum, will they see these weird posts and decide not to join? or will they join the forums to argue with these people?

I agree with Marc. Just contact them and tell them what you think. If they continue to post bad things, put an end to 'em!

heres the problem, i'm not advanced in physics so I can't argue with them or justify them being wrong. I reply on my trustworthy and educated moderators to tell me if there crackpots. So what am I to say to them?

Here's a tip. Don't ever argue with your members. You have the authority - you don't need to argue.

Just refer to the rules. Ensure them that anything frivolous must go into your general chat forum and if it doesn't, it is against the rules. The first time, you just move it for them and give them a warning. If they try to argue, don't argue back. Just ban them. If they apologise, then let them be. If they continue to offend, ban them. If they mend their ways, let them be.

PS. I've always liked your forums. Well done.

dethfire, who are the trouble makers?

I popped into the physics forum and read part of the 'Love' thread with interest.

Message me if you don't want to mention it here. But please, tell me

I would be interested to see how clear their messing is.
(I am currently developing a theory (the basis of which I put forward in my MA thesis) that is about the implications of certain aspects of physical law that is as unpopular in my field (not physics) as their opinions sound in theirs)

I also like to observe people with strong opinions in debate (regardless of whether they are right or wrong). I'm a bit of a people watcher

    Anywho, please message me. Thx

...Which is why I suggested you don't mention it here and instead Private Message me in the first place.
