start the first few pages and then skip to the last page and then work back into the middle

Dan from datemill sounds like a great support. I will contact him and find out if his product will suit.

cococo there were a few links that went to community building / social networking, I thinks one was a set-up based in Sweden

Cheers
Hi All4 data, thanks this looks great, I did find it from the thread however didn't pay alot of attention till u pointed it out again. I wish I had more knowledge to tell you whether it is suitable, but I need to pass it on to my web developer. Have you noticed in the forum discussions any particular contrators that may be familiar with social networking software that have their services for hire. Thanks again.
Are you looking for something along the lines of MySpace? Like PHPFox? www.PHPFoxDemo.com

cococo is looking for a social networking script written in PHP/MySQL that caters to a particular outdoor activity that can be done alone or in groups, and also has a large professional following (think something along the lines of kayaking or hiking).
And if you're wondering how I know about this (btw, the kayaking and hiking examples are just that - examples), I've been in touch with cococo about this via PM.

If you have vBulletin, then check out Zoints Local which is not only extremel powerful and configurable, but it's also free.![]()
Hi Dan,
Could you give an opinion on dchapman recommendation thread #9.
Thanks

You'd have to purchase a license for vBulletin if you want to use it. And vBulletin is not cheap.
Don't get me wrong, vBulletin is powerful forum software (Sitepoint uses it for a reason), but locking yourself into a single provider this early in the game would be tatamount to committing suicide. Should you decide to power your social networking site using vBulletin, this would be an option to consider, but you'd need someone who knows what they're doing with Zoints Local on-hand to avoid messing anything up, since it is very powerful, and not very easy to use for the beginner (and by beginner, I mean someone who is new to both the vBulletin forum application and the Zoints framework).

Zoints has potential ... http://david.zoints.com/ The design is ugly.
So if I use local I don't have to worry about sharing members/etc but get all the functionality of Zoints hosted on my local server?Originally Posted by dchapman
Is there any documentation out there about Zoints that I can read? I assume that you can create all your own blocks, etc... and not have to use the car ones that they use in the example.
dchapman is the right person to ask as he is involved in development, right?
the first time I looked at zoints there were a few things that I didn't like however in the same way where myspace has evolved I thinks Zoints has also evolved where it is a tool which can be used by all and not just a certain populace
For the record, phpbb2 and other versions will soon be availableOriginally Posted by Dan Schulz
Heheheh. You can easily change the style to fit your personal preferancesOriginally Posted by dalt
As an example:
Here is a forum using it: http://www.writersbeat.com/
Here is a Zoints Local profile on that forum: http://www.writersbeat.com/z/DFischer/ (yes, you can change the buttons at the top. I'm sure lots of button sets will be coming out. I know of at least one so far)
I haven't had a chance to look for cool creations on forums using Zoints Local yet, but the same style editor is included so designs like:
http://demoa.zoints.com/
http://papergirl.zoints.com
http://pogopuggie.zoints.com
http://tomgupper.zoints.com
and more are possible. If you let them, Zoints Local will enable your talented members to create content rich websites within your forum.

The docs are still a little incomplete but we're working on changing that: PDF. Hopefully it helps a bit. I'm happy to answer any other questions you have in the meantime.Originally Posted by tke71709
Indeed. No matter what kind of site you run, Zoints Local can be contoured to be a value add to your community.Originally Posted by All4Data

I like Zoints Local better than other scripts I've seen...![]()

Hi,
You can find a nice list of social networking software at:
Scripts like Myspace
Hope it helps

This is starting to really piss me off.
Social networking != myspace.
If you don't mind the work, you might want to check out drupal or civic space with the organic groups system.
Componet modules:

Example setup:
http://groups.drupal.org/

A nice idea is Zoints but confusing as all getup. I had my forums automatically deleted from Zoints even though I had it all setup. They are trying to get it to work but IMHO it will be a while until it is very easily usable so that my users will make the time investment.
PHPFox is a mess but can be cleaned up easier in order to create a social networking site. It also includes integration with a free IM tool, which is very important IMHO. There are no perfect solutions at the moment although Fox seems still to be the leader. I looked at Handshakes and was not impressed by the way they run the business and it is also encoded -- never going that route again unless it's via a large company that has funding, presence and a product I don't need to worry about. Alicia -- another ambitious project that has team leaders, alleged egos and other limited releases that will go nowhere without significant help from the community at large, most of whom didn't seem to have access to the project.
There is another piece of software which is ASP which is excellent. It is also mucho expensive but it seems sweet. If you want to use it requirements are a Windows box unfortunately as well as at least $2K if you want to have a reasonable number of options. I'd make the investment but don't want to manage a windows box...
My Free Legal Advice Site -- I also buy forums and websites!

I'm working on a project now with drupal, but I have to admit...it is COMPLICATED!Originally Posted by VelvetElvis
