    Arrow Diet and Health Community

I'm helping someone with the launching of this new dieting and health community, http://www.groupdiets.com

The site has been up for about a week now and the general theme is diet support and helping on another out by creating diet buddies.

Our hope is to grow the site into a true community for not only strict dieters, but for those looking to achieve a healthy lifestyle and keep active.

Of course, its brand new, so any feedback would be appreciated

    thanks,
    Loren

We just opened up our community website last week. The site is MiraMesa.com and it is for the community where I live... Mira Mesa. There are almost 80,000 people that live here and a HUGE business population. It is one of the largest communities in San Diego, CA.

The site is very basic right now, but we are working on lots of cool features that should make the site a "Must-go-to" for local residents in the near future. We are partnering up with lots of leaders in the community to add up-to-date content and getting the local High School to have their own section as well.

Right now we are concentrating on getting the Business and Restaurant Directories completed. We have a few guys going business to business getting the information for this. Hopefully when completed... it will be a much better resource than the Yellow Pages for local companies.

If you get a chance... take a peek and let me know what you think. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks and Happy Holidays to All,

I have a small growing community regarding War and it's effects.
The most active area is the image gallery fourum where users can comment some rarely seen pictures.
    War Forum

Have fun and a little warning of some very graphical images (not for the faint hearted)

I have to agree with buying traffic for a forum based site IS a waste of time. If the topic is of interest to the webseeker, and you promoted it enough, correctly, and optimized your pages so that the big engines pick it up, then traffic will be easier to come by. I bought traffic initially for my dietdiscussions site(which as I said earlier is a waste of time...people came and then left..leaving me poorer), but because my content is unique on my ownedforums site, it keeps people coming back for more without having me pay out cent.

Trying to get the word out on my site, which I've never fully promoted up until today. It gets decent traffic, and my forums are growing.

The site's been around for 6+ years, and the forums for about 3 years. Need to promote more.

    Currently three sites

http://www.galahtech.com - has been going for approx 14 months and has 1700 members. We found that simply hosting shareware and support forums for shareware has boisted membership in the last few months (we currently get 6 - 10 new members per day). We have also added AI which is getting us good publicity in the AI community, but could get tricky if people start asking tricky questions (still on a learning curve with AIML).

http://www.ibunique.com - under 6 months old with just over 700 members. Basically we offer a lot of free hacks and skins for invision power board 1.2 and 1.3 with people joining to take advantage. We also offer pre made and custom skins which a number of people have joined to get. Guess you can't go wrong offering free stuff

http://www.mangojacks.com - went live over night and now has 70 odd members. Basically a fun place, so will let you know how a site with an aussie flavour goes.

Basically you need to skin up your site, add a whole lot of hacks, and make it stand out from the crowd imho.

We switched from vBulletin to Invision on all our sites as we get far better support from invision than we got from Jelsoft. (That's a personal opinion btw, and a lot of people claim better service at vB. However on a number of occasions we have had invision staff on our boards working out problems we have created for ourselves).

Currently I only have one site: maccrazy.net

It's a website focused on Mac news and rumors. I am currently trying to build up the number of forum members.

I use a script I wrote for the news items and Invision Board for the forums

We launched HostBidder.com about a month ago. We'll be skinning it shortly.

We are currently trying to develop a network of partner forums, as well as introduce some new ones.

If you wan't to do well IMO, don't use IPB.

I've seen the most popular vB forums.
    Many mid sized phpBB forums.
Many large "no-name" forums (that you've never heard of).

And loads and loads of crappy IPB sites.

Do you think there is a reason why there are loads of IPB forums? Because it's the best forum script next to vB...

    http://forums.liquidnitro.net <-- Crappy?

With some work IPB even surpasses vBulletin. And don't you dare rate phpBB higher than IPB. What it all boils down to is what you do with the script, not so much which script you are using.

Hahaha...WHAT?!?! What are you talking about? Forums software has NOTHING to do with your success and EVERYTHING to do with functionality. There are plenty of very popular boards that don't even use vB, IPB, or phpBB.

For any of the software offerings there are a 101 "crappy" sites. If you have a look around our various places you may note we don't even look like an invision board (it's all in the skinning, which l don't do).

Our tech site went through a number of months of not growing while on vBulletin 2.3.0. Since moving to Invision 1.2 it has really exploded.

    Besides which

    - macflora have switched over to invision and those guys aren't exactly a small site.

    - there's also a ballet site with 40k+ members who switched over from vBulletin as well.

It's getting so you can't sell your vBulletin licenses anymore

As some one said above, the software you use is a personal preference. You will have a growing community regardless if you use vB/phpBB/IPB if you put the work into it.

I didn't mean to start a fight, and its my opinion.

I didn't say there weren't tons of great IPB sites, I've just seen more popular vB/phpBB sites.

I am VERY biased though, being a phpBB fanboy for months, now moving to vB, I never opened my mind to IPB.

I think its a very functional script, just not a one that makes me want to post.. oh well.

Bottom line a forum with good traffic, good members, and lots of resources WILL do well regardless.

Exactly so Dan. I'm not a fan of vBulletin, but we have members who run their own sites and swear by it. Horses for courses and all that, it's what you feel comfortable using.

The only problem l had with phpBB (had a look at that one), was the amount of hacking you would have to do to add what are standard features in vB and IPB. Though got to say some of the available hacks for phpBB out shine the ones available for both vB and IPB (James Gay's SRS Posting Bot for example).

We are currently running a book on one site about whether vB 3.0 final will be released before the upcoming IPB 2.0 (schedule for beta release end of the month, invisionboard.com is up and running on a pre-release version).

Olternit, please don't use black as a background, it doesn't match with the blues and blue-greens you have there. That's just my opinion.
