    I still have not been sent the mysql.server file as I was told I was going to

    Without it I cant start the server on bootup

    Kevin, have you found where it is in the new version of Mysql

    mysql.server is not the only way to start MySQL, hell it would take about three seconds to write your own mysql.server, all it is, is a bash script that runs the command line safe_mysqld executable. The reason I didn't send it, you seem to have shifted your interest by the end of the post, I figured you were following Kevin's instructions at that point and didn't see the point in sending it to you, do you still want it?

    By the way did you compile MySQL yourself or did you install a binary distribution?

    I just did a test install of MySQL 3.23.47. After doing the 'configure', 'make', and 'make install' steps described in my book and articles, I went to the MySQL install directory and looked in share/mysql. Sure enough, there is the mysql.server file.

    The mysql.server file is attached to this post; however, you should consider the fact that it is not present on your system as a warning sign. Are you sure you performed the installation by the book?

    The computer was way to slow to do anything useful so I put together a descent linux system to learn on. I reinstalled RH 7.2 and will follow your instructions from the articles again

    I got this warning at the end of ./configure for PHP 4.1.1

    Besides above I ran into another problem with installing PHP 4.1.1

    Here are the instructions

    We'll worry about fine-tuning php.ini shortly. For now, we need to make sure Apache knows where to find PHP, so that it can load the program when it starts up. Open your Apache httpd.conf configuration file (usually /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf if you're using your Linux distribution's copy of Apache) in your favorite text editor. Look for a line that looks like this:


    LoadModule php4_module lib/apache/libphp4.so

    Find the new, uncommented line (no # at the start of the line), not the old line that you may have commented out earlier. It may not appear along with the other LoadModule lines in the file. Once you find it, you might need to change the path to match all the other LoadModule lines in the file. Under RedHat Linux, this means you’ll have to change the line to make it look like this:


    LoadModule php4_module modules/libphp4.so

    PHP will probably run correctly without this change, but on older versions of RedHat, Apache won’t be able to find the libphp4.so file until you make this change. If you prefer, leave the line alone for now -- you can come back and change it if you run into trouble
    I did all the commands excempt to rename 'LoadModule php4_module lib/apache/libphp4.so' to 'LoadModule php4_module modules/libphp4.so'

    I went to restart apache and I got this error
    [root@localhost lib]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart
    Stopping httpd: [ OK ]
    Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 341 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
    Cannot add module via name 'mod_php4.c': not in list of loaded modules
    [FAILED]
    So as the instructions say if you have problems just rename the file. I did it and I got the same error

    In the beginning of the instruction I commented out "LoadModule php4_module modules/libphp4.so' as you can see in the http.conf I attached. I tried to atach a ZIP but I could not

    Its funny when I installed all of this the first time I had no errors at all and I followed the same instructions

    Please help

    I went bach to the beginning of the instructions and I commented out 'AddModule mod_php4.c' - the line giving me the problems. I hope this was just the problem

    I know I commented it out before but it must have uncommented it out during the installation

    After Apache restarted OK

    Was this the problem

    After I got Apache to start after uncommenting that line I went to "First PHP Script"

    I uploaded it and instead of displaying it it ask me if I want to dl it

    I think the problem is on 'doc_root = the document root folder of your Web server' part of the instructions

    According to Apache's test page the document root is /var/www - I enter that and it asks me to dl

    I also tried /var/www/html

    Unless there is something compelety wrong here

    Please help

    If I have to reinstall PHP 4.1.1 please tell me how to get rid of what I have

    I follwed the same instructions before and it worked great but now I have these problems

    Ok.... it sounds like you've got PHP installed just fine. I'm not sure I understand the problems you're encountering now, though.

    Where did you upload it to, what was the filename, and what URL did you type into your browser?
    According to Apache's test page the document root is /var/www - I enter that and it asks me to dl
    What do you mean 'I enter that'? The document root is the directory on the Web server machine that corresponds to the root directory of the Web site. So from what you're saying if you place index.html in /var/www on your server, you should then be able to view it by loading http://serverhostname/index.html in your Web browser.

    I don't think you set up your httpd.conf file correctly. One you have your LoadModule line inside

    I uploaded it to the same place as the Apache test page with the file name'today.php'. I put 'http://192.168.0.40/today.php' in the browser. 'http://192.168.0.40/' brings up the Apache test page It asked me to dl and save it instead of dispaying it

    I did what freddy said to do to the httpd.conf file and it works now.

    The only reason why I commented out those two lines is because in the very beginning of the tutorial it said to do so.

    Actually, the very beginning of the tutorial is confusing. Its hard to tell if you need to comment those lines . Then later on it sais "not the one where you commented out before, but the new one". My understanding is to leave it commented out. If I remember correctly, when I installed this before where everything went smoothle I ignored those beginning instructions because they were quit confusing

    I have a few questions if you dont mind answering.

    1. I posted before a warning PHP gave about configuring it with Mysql. Is that normal because the tutorial makes no mentioning of it but it looked quit important

    2. How can I tell if PHP is loaded as a module. Here is the php info page from phpmyadmin

    3. From the directions
    Open php.ini in your favorite text editor and have a glance through it. Most of the settings are pretty well explained, and most of the default settings are just fine for our purposes. Just check to make sure that your settings match these:


    register_globals = On
    magic_quotes_gpc = On
    doc_root = the document root folder of your Web server
    extension_dir = the PHP extension directory
    My php.ini with regard to extension directory looks like this

    extension_dir = ./
    Is this OK

    1)Yes you can use the MySQL header files that come with PHP, its really no big deal. Or you can specify a location to MySQL's header files when compiling PHP by using --with-mysql=/sompath/to/mysql

    If you just use --with-mysql you'll use PHP's header files, which is fine.

    2)Server API Apache Measn it is compiled as a module for use with Apache. If it said CGI, you would have a binary.


    3)UNless you plan on using some extenssions, you cqan leave it as is.

    Well I did not. I used the configure command in the tutorial. I hope that is fine. I am sure it is

    I am trying to install mod_gzip. I put 'mod_gzip.c' in the /usr/sbin - the same place where apxs is and ran the command 'apxs -i -a -c mod_gzip.c'

    1. How can I tell if this is now a module. I looked at my phpMyAdmin php info page at it is not listed as a module. I added

    to Apache's http.conf file as RCI showed in the directions but I see no mentioning of any thing being mod_gziped as the example shows. This could be because I only have very small html files being called but I dont know

    So can you tell me if mod_gzipis installed
