    Re-Install system files.

I recently got a virus and deleted it. Problem is it was in a system file and now when the computer start's up it acts all funny.

I dont want to format my hard drive does anyone know if its possible to re-install all the system files and still keep everything else that's on my hard drive.

    I'm using Win98.

    which system file in particular?

You can just re-install win98 over the top..

But you *may* have to re-istall all of your programs/ and change settings.

The whole lot. Or at least most of it, a fresh start would probably be handy because of all those demo packages I got off companys adding to my registry etc.

Just whack in your win98 CD and go for it then

(so long as you've got a *real* startup disk... or you could just boot directly from the CD by changing the boot order in your bios)

Ok I re-installed window's didnt fix the problem. So I am going to format the whole thing but could someone tell me if this is possible.

To split the hard-drive into 2 and put backups of files I want onto it then format the whole thing but keeping one of the hd partians untouched.

Yeah that is possible. Just make sure to only format the partition you want and not both.

it didn't work? it should have...

As far as i know you actually *cannot* partition a harddrive once you've got as OS installed on it, but i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong

Have you got a CD burner or a ZIP drive? it would be easier to copy your files onto one of those, then format...

As far as splitting up a partition, the only way I know how to do this is with PartitionMagic. The program comes with a $50 price tag though. As platinum said, you'd be better off copying to CDs or ZIPs.

I can't actually remember the name of the virus . I just re-installed window's though and left the HD untouched so that would explain why its acting dodgy.

Another reason though is I have never de-fragged my hd in the 3 year's I have had this comp. That would be another explanation for it doing stuff it shouldnt.

Get yourself a copy of Partition Magic, you will find it is an excellent tool that you will use again and again. It is easy to use and in my view a 'must have' bit of software.
