    Perfect Code Editor Continued

This poll is related to this post...
    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=401766

Lots (and lots) of editors mentioned here, so I thought a vote is in order. Only 34 options allowed so I used random.org and got rid of the first few random ones that I hadn't heard of.

BTW, you can pick more than one

John, any chance you can add win32pad to the list? That's what I use (in fact, it's ALL I use).

    Dreamweaver all the way...

It's easy to understand (Syntax highlighting) many features (such as ftp) and lots of flexibility for non-developers (design view).

I'm surprised that the HotDog web editor isn't included in the list, especially considering that several of SitePoint's employees previously worked for Sausage Software. Sausage hasn't released an update to HotDog professional in a long time... anyone know what happened to them? Did they close up shop or something?

Vim, Zend Studio, Eclipse & Visual Slick Edit for me...

Personally, when it comes to real text editors, it's a close call between Vim(or emacs) and SlickEdit, with SlickEdit coming out tops because it seriously kicks some buttock.

Any chance of getting JetBrains IntelliJ included in there too? Much nicer than Eclipse.

And get the rest of these pansy light-weight text-editors out of the poll, like Notepad*, Dreamweaver & EditPlus etc.

Why does everyone like vim so much? I'm playing with it right now, (and I've messed with emacs a little too) and I just don't get it.

I'm not knocking 'em, I assume there's reasons why they're great, I'm just trying to catch on to why.

Crimson Editor(Lite) for simple stuff, Zend Studio for big jobbies

Well, I've ditched PHP Designer for Eclipse with the PHP IDE.

Install was a little confusing, trying to figure out what and how I needed to get it set up properly, and I still haven't figured out how to pick and install plugins yet (which is supposed to be it's big strength) But I have to say I like it.

Much better than what I was using anyways. The only thing I miss is being able to drag around selected text with the mouse. Anyone eclipse users know of a plug in that'll do that?

Can you add "Komodo" to the list, because that's the one I like to use.

I voted for Dreamweaver. I love using version 8, and it's nice to be able to use Topstyle with it.

Once you get the hang of vi it's fast and stays out of your way. Cream is vim with training wheels btw. You can make it act like wordpad. See screenshots

Kind of ironic you see all the bragging about "real designers" using Notedpad but this poll by far show Dreamweaver to be the most popular.

    I like komodo:
    - macro's
    - extendible with javascript or python
    - customizable tabs, interface elements
    - debugging for perl, php
    - regex tool!!! allows for testing of complex regexes on a piece of text
    - virgin management in professional edition (pun intended...)

People looking for a text editor/IDE for PHP, perl, ruby, C, C++, ... should definitely download the trial and give it a go!

Just because something is more popular doesn't mean it's better. But at the same time I don't see much benefit in using Notepad alone unless it's the only thing you have available.
