Today, I noticed that my modem was working like crazy even tho no internet applications were running...i started up my firewall (ZoneAlarm) and it told me that it is MSUpdate and it is located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
I denied its access to internet and it stopped transmitting information...now, i'm wondering what it might be and if there's a way to fix it...
I'm not sure of how much of info from my comp was sent/received but i'd rather no one was poking around in my files....
I know I made a mistake and downloaded a file from http://hacked.at/d-info which most likely caused the problem...i've learned my lesson....i need to fix this tho ...
If anyone knows anything about it, pls post...
Thanks!
Microsoft Update is a program that comes with most newer versions of Windows and checks the Microsoft Website periodically for software upgrades. A quick search of McAfee's database showed no malicious code using this name so you're probably fine.
Just to be safe, though, you should install virus protection software.
Windows XP automatically downloads important updates, and asks you if you wish to install them when it's done downloading. You can turn it off, or make it download only on confirmation, too.
I find it to be very convinient.
