I see lots of "what a good CEO should do" but very little of how to go about it!
A great CEO. 'cause good enough just aint good enough, will encourage the people around him/ her to take responsibility. When problems occur that the employees, who are often are closest to the problem feel confident enough to present solutions.
Great CEOs are not afraid of delegation. They have realised that they cannot hope to manage everyday happenings themselves.Have the good sense to know a little about a lot rather than being a pidgeon hole expert. The great CEO knows how to ask the pertinant questions of those around him/her and then has the wisdom to make a decision. Even if the decision proves to be wrong occasionally any decision is better than non at all.
The great CEO will have calculated the variables and made allowances. Most of all the great CEOs door is always open.
