    Hi Everyone,

I am really struggling trying to get the right layout for my new site! I am hoping that some of you could give me some ideas. I am creating a site to help web designers create better sites. It will include free graphics, a design community, tools, tips and more. You can see the page I want for visitors to enter my site. You can find it at: http://www.xzight.com

Here is what I want on each page and how I want it to feel, but I just can't come up with the "right" layout! I think the thing that I'm struggling with is first of all, the resolution dilemma, and that I want to include a banner ad for advertisers, but then it doesn't look as "professional and sleek" as I want it.

Here's what I want on each inside page:

logo (not sure if it should be circle like the entry page or not)

a navigation system, either text or graphics, but either way, I want it to be mouseovers.

links for other areas or a pull down. (for example, home, contact, link to, etc.)

an area for text of course.

    a banner for advertisers.

AND A MODERN SLEEK LOOK (so the visitors get the same feeling they get from the entrance page)

Any advice would be great!!!!!! If someone can help me, I am willing to add a text link to your site to the bottom of each page. That's how desparate I am!

    Thanks,
    Carolyn

    Carolyn,

I'd recommend creating a smaller version of that red button (looks awesome, by the way) and putting it in the top-left-hand-corner of the page...and then maybe the large ad banner to the right of it, with the navigation below...this is basically what I'm planning to do with something I'm work on.

    This is my 200th post!

Yes the logo is very nice looking but I think it's a bit dark. Could you create one similar on a white background, as it might look better.

    a bit dark, yes

but totally smooth. I can dig it =)

and what type of logo are you looking for exactly? The entrance could make a good logo. but i dont guess it would look as good if it were sized down too much. Youd loose the fine lines and the picture in the background would be difficult to see.
But you could keep the same idea going. Like keep the red tone and the lighting. Then maybe instead of the picture laid underneath the red, perhaps you could put "Xzight" ???
i dunno, but i figure maybe that will spark SOMETHING that starts the creative fire =)

What about a bigger logo with links layed out around it. Then have the text appearing actually in the circle, replacing the logo but keeping the shape.
Keep your links at the bottom.
What about banner ads down one side, rather than left to right?
Why banner ads though? I think they'll conflict with the modern, slick approach. What about affiliate text links? (If it's money you're after).

I agree with including the 'xzight' name in the logo somehow.

Thanks for the ideas and the compliments! I guess I figured that I had to have a banner ad on each page to make money from my site. But what do you guys think? It's such a hard decision because I REALLY want the slick professional look, but I want to try to get advertisers interested in advertising because I am sick at home and not working! (which hurts the wallet)

I'm working on some layouts and I'll post them here so you guys can help me figure out what looks the best!

    Keep the ideas comin!

    Thanks,
    Carolyn

The first page looks very much like a splash page to me. I can't explore more so I can't see what the other page's design will be like, but the just-to-be-cool graphic is common to all splash pages (or most, to be exact).

Congrats Chris! Now you're at 211 though

    Quinn,

Thanks I don't know if I'll ever catch up to you, though.

Please remember that it isn't the quantity of posts but the quality that Sitepoint strives for.

Click on the View profile button, its at the top of each post, the little happy guy.

    I think I am headed towards 90

    Back to the topic..........

Nice graphic, but as Quinn said it looks like a spash page. I think you need some content on the main page, to give your visitors a taste of what's in the site. After all, the main page should be a summary of the page.

That's all there is to say from me.
