Ah, but I am a designer. The Hummer has some wonderfully powerful design. As a dream practicality can be tossed out the window. Every time I see one come down the road my heart jumps up and down.

It also reflects my personality somewhat: bold, powerful, confident, daring. I am a woman, 6 feet tall, lived in a man's world for a long time and standing my ground. So, the Hummer tells my story -- Datura

That's my 1988 Honda CRX DX. I've had it for a year now and have been meaning to fix it up (new engine, body kit, the usual teen race craze) but I haven't been able to afford to do a thing to it (other than on a need basis; like a new alternator, battery, tires, etc).

I am, however, now accepting donations to fix it up. Feel free to contact me for further details.

    Ever consider getting a job???
I started working when I was 14 and bought/fixed up my own rides.

Primarily, because nobody owes me anything...
Consequently, nobody owes you anything either, so don't hold yer breath for any hand outs.

I work 30 hours a week at $12 an hour at a telephone place (which is extremely good for my area). Yet college life is not the cheapest, or easiest. Thanks for the comment.

    The two accords I had:

    1. 1985 honda accord, my first car (1996). Spent more time in the shop than on the road in the 18 months I owned it.
    2. 1997 honda accord, bought at a used car dealership (2001). The thing died on my way home. I returned it the next morning.

You couldn't pay me to take another accord.

I don't run over men, that is the mentality of "men thinking", to run over. No, just for my own "feel good about myself" thing. It is strange though: I never tried to be like a man, I love being a woman, but I tried to have the same recognition for my achievements as men get, that is all. Today things are a little different, but in my time, when I started out in the professional world, girls were trained to be obedient housewives. It was a very hard path to clear then.

And the Hummer is a nifty symbol for that struggle -- Datura

1929 Ford Hiboy Roadster. Handbuilt by my wife and me. 400ci GM smallblock, three speed Turbo Hydromatic 350 transmission with high stall speed convertor and shift kit, 9in. Ford rear with 3:70::1 gears. With 275HP and gobs of torque in a car weighing about 2400lb., this baby flies. It's also got a fully upholstered rumble seat.

I hope the photo comes through, as I've never attached an image before.

    My two rides

    I alternate between two old cars: a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 190e and a 1990 BMW 325i.

While in college I worked at a garage, bought air tools with my beer money, lived poor, and devised a plan: Old cars with "status" symbol names eventually become "classics." Since old cars are easier for backyard mechanics to work on than new cars I decided to buy two modern-day classics. While one is "down" for repairs I drive the other. I pre-emptively replace things that will fail for the car's age/mileage/condition and so far they both haven't broken down at the same time. Plus, since my cars are older than your average car, junkyards are full of those once high-priced Mercedes and BMW parts for a fraction of the cost. I don't have a heart attack if the door gets dinged, it is an old car afterall. Plus, I learn a lot by forcing myself to "do it all" which includes a little bodywork and repainting both cars sometime next year. Shop manuals and Smartflix.com make it all possible.

The only downside to this arrangement is you absolutely have to love working on cars. There's always something that needs to be done and falling behind is how cars like mine become expensive headaches. Sometimes I wish I just had a Honda that I could just put gas and oil into and never-ever think about. But then I'll fire up my 17-year old "banker's hotrod" Mercedes and go blasting down some backroads and that all goes away.

    -Dave

Well, I agree - my plan is to run an older car for everyday use - I have an 1990 Audi 100 waiting ready. Downside to your plan in the UK is the cost of compulsory insurance and road tax which would make having a spare car like that quite expensive. That said, classic cars built before 1973 have free road tax and can be insured on a classic insurance policy for much less cost, so a spare car of that age would be OK.
