New planet confirmed at Epsilon Eridani - MAY BE PHOTOGENIC!!!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/200610...htbephotogenic

Astronomers also believe another planet in the system may also exist, but have not confirmed it yet.

Cool. I'd love to see the photos if/when they come out.

I always wondered why they never upgraded the Hubble... I'm sure they could by now... technology must have improved since then.

They have, actually. Hubbles upgrades have been small in comparison, but then when you think about it, there's not much you can do when you're only getting less than 1% of the total US federal budget despite having to support such a large infrastructure.

It is in a different solar system. We've progressed from mapping the stars to starting to map their solar systems.

Yup. Another star. In this case, Epsilon Eridani, a young (roughly 730 million years old) star with a developing solar system that's pretty darn close to us (about 10 light-years away, IIRC).

Given how at the young age of 730 million years our own planet was constantly being bombarded by comets, asteroids, meteoroids, and other cosmic debris, I highly doubt that life would have started (been a while since I read up on the subject), but if it had, it would have been nothing more complex than common bacteria.

In other words, I don't see us setting foot on any planet orbiting around Epsilon Eridani (if any of them, or a moon orbiting one of the Jovian worlds in that system) for another billion years or so -- and that's assuming our own species survives that long in the first place.

thats great to hear. the more the better. and what Dan said, i can confirm Hubble was upgraded to a better spec, it can now see the whole colour spectrum from infra-red, colour and ultra viloet.

I know all of this cos I watched it on Discovery Science today, lol. maybe thats why there showing the upgrade on tv.
