With all the buzz of Ruby on Rails I'm interested in learning more. I know a little PHP and MySQL but far from guru so I'm wondering how much of a learning curve it is to learn Ruby on Rails and is it worth the effort?

It's worth it if you plan to make database backed web sites.
The learning curve isn't steep if you already know how to program.
It would also help if you learn Ruby to really understand what happens in a Ruby on Rails application.

I haven't ever looked at Ruby or Ruby on Rails but I'm pretty interested in looking into it further. I'm looking at getting the book Agile Web Development with Rails.

That is a good book, but I also suggest Programming Ruby. It will definately help you learn the language before digging into Rails. I read a bit of Programming Ruby, and then had it next to me for reference when I started looking at Agile Wev Dev with Rails.
If you give someone a program,
you will frustrate them for a day;
if you teach them how to program,
you will frustrate them for a lifetime.

I had a look at this site where you can do a few basic tutorials on Ruby. http://tryruby.hobix.com/ Nice site too, all the learning is dynamic and in the browser. Pretty cool. Ruby kind of seems a bit like actionscripting in flash.

Hey,
I recently started to learn Ruby, but use Ruby on Rails. I suggest you use that, it's great.
Download it : http://www.rubyonrails.org/
and then learn : http://www.rubyonrails.org/docs
That website alone will get you running on ruby. Don't worry about backend MySQL connection with ruby, as it is REALLY easy.
Enjoy!
