    Intermittent Problems with Safari

    We developed a site recently and tested it in IE and FF and it works great in both. However, we're getting some Intermittent errors in Safari (2.0.4). First, when the page loads ALL the text on the page is underlined (except the links). The CSS is set up to have links with "text-decoration: none;" and on hover hover "text-decoration: underline;". When you hover over a link all the text is no longer underlined but it comes back when you get off the link.

    Also, the page tends to break if you refresh it a couple of times (or sometimes it breaks when it first loads). The four large images at the top get out of alignment. But it will fix itself eventually if you just keep refreshing it.

    The site is: http://www.rit.edu/~702www/

    I'm not that experienced with Mac's so I'm really sure what would be causing these STRANGE problems. Any ideas?

    Still experiencing the problem. If there was a problem with the code or CSS I would expect it to be broken all the time. But, the fact that it will change and sometimes fix itself if you refresh it enough times really gets me.

    Any ideas?

    I don't personally have a mac to test on so I'm not totally sure.

    However I find that a good debugging tip for problems like this is to comment out sections of your css until the problem no longer happens. You can then comment out smaller and smaller sections of your CSS until the problem starts occuring again so that you can narrow down where in your code you are having your problems.

    Your page probably will start looking a bit of a mess as you comment out certain styles but it should help you narrow down the problem.

    It could also be something simple in your page that safari doesn't like... maybe the dreamweaver templates? also try importing stylesheets instead of link as I have had some problems in some browsers before with that.

    Sorry I can't help track down the problems but I hope that helps you find it?

    I know it sounds like I'm beating a dead horse, but you have to validate your markup first.

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...t.edu/~702www/
    You're using the depreciated language attribute for your script element, which is not supported by HTML Strict. You have to use the type attribute instead (type="text/javascript").

    The name attribute has also been depreciated in (almost) all elements save for those associated with forms (where they are still required) and a few others I'm not going to mention at this time since it appears your site doesn't even use them. Why not replace name="" with id="" instead?

    You also have to add alt="" attributes to your image elements. If the image is purely presentational in nature, a null value of alt="" is acceptable. If the image has meaning however, the attribute should convey either the equivilent meaning of the image or (in some cases) actually describe the image.

    You also have other depreciated attributes in your code as well. border and align have been depreciated and will not validate under a strict DOCTYPE. Also, <a name="top"> needs to be enclosed inside a block level element so it is not a direct descendant of the BODY element. Furthermore, target="" is no longer valid in HTML Strict. If you want to get links to open in new windows, you have to use rel="external" and tie that into JavaScript (since target is still part of the DOM).

    You can learn how to do that here:
    http://www.sitepoint.com/article/sta...ompliant-world

    Cleaning up those errors will solve your HTML validation problems.

    Once done, your HTML code should look like this:
    HTML Code:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
    <html><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/index.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->

    Invalid number : float center is not a float value : center
    Elements can be floated either to the left or the right, but not to the center. To achieve center positioning, you have to declare a width for the element, and then give it a margin of 0 auto.
    Code:
    selector {margin: 0 auto;}
    Also (and I am not 100% sure about this), I don't think Safari likes the use of the @media rules. That may be what's causing your CSS problem.

    I'd also replace that messy Dreamweaver-generated JavaScript code with some cleaner scripts as well, but I doubt that's related to your problem with Safari.

    Note that you'll have to add img {border: 0; vertical-align: top;} to your stylesheet to replicate the presentational markup that was in your original HTML.
