how do i go about getting this?
ive been to a few places that offer them but they look pretty cheezy. I would like a nice professional looking counter if i can get one for free...
and how hard are they to code? would i do it in Javascript?

    Try http://www.thecounter.com/ or
try searching http://www.cgi-resources.com/ for a counter written in PERL.

You can't build a counter in JavaScript because JavaScript works only on the client-side, and a counter needs to update a file or database on the server each time someone visits your page.

Counters are no longer considered professional when included on your page. They're basically reserved for personal or home pages.

Most people today use tracking instead of counting. The difference is that counting is just a little graphic on your site that displays a # corresponding to your # of visitors.

Tracking is a seperate webpage that posts all sorts of information, total number of people, total impressions, domains, referrers, etc etc.

One of the best is hitbox.com but the free version requires you put a banner on your site. If you choose the biggest banner you get a 10 cent CPC (cost per click through) rate. So if 10 people click on the banner you get about a buck. Hitbox does have bannerless options but they cost money.

There are alot of such tracking services, and I think there is a list of them on this site, atleast their used to be on webmaster-resources.com But most require a button of some sort on your site. There is one that doesn't but I dont remember which one it is.

You can also, if you're hosted on a paid host or Hypermart, you can use the built-in program which tracks it as each individual HTTP request is issued. No banner at all.

ok i got a counter. PERL one... And in reading the instructions it mentions that i need to edit the first line to point to the perl on my system...

this website is on geocities.com. How do i know where PERL is on the server system?

    does that make sense?

Hey, The Perl issue..You need to talk to geocities and make sure they allow users to run cgi <perl> scripts. They can tell you the path that you would need to insert into the code. Second..The chmod thing refers to UNIX which i guess your not running so dont pay no mind to it and lastly the counter requires SSI again you need to find out if geocities allows the access. I haven't dealt with them so no clue. Hope this helps ya

    Hello,

Unfortunately unless Goecities has changed you can not upload any CGI programs to your space. But they should offer you come choices for counters, or I do know other services offer remotely hosted CGI counters.

My suggestion, if you need free space move to Hypermart. Also SitePoint has information on most of the stuff you inquired about. Whoops sorry, should not use the word stuff, make that information.

Donít want to offend any of my British friends.

    Regards,

    Michael

I personally use SiteMeter.com, I'm required to put a tiny little 25x25 image (a little colored sqaure) somewhere on my page, but it doesn't stand out as all that unprofessional.

I think I'll give HitBox a try though. Does it track the same things as SiteMeter? Time Zones, Browser Share, referalls, etc?

FYI * * With SiteMeter you can also have an invisible counter on your page . . .

SiteMeter may not have all the 'bells and whistles' of other free counters but the counter graphics aren't flashy like HitBox, has basic tracking, keeps adding new features and their WebMaster will actually answer his eMail
