    How do you change the text displayed on the browsers status bar at the bottom of the screen when someone hovers their mouse over a link on a web page? Normally it shows the address it links to, or the bit of javascript it calls. For some reason, the reference texts I have don't mention how to do this. Thank you :P

    Try this scrolling message ... it's from Total JavaScripts 99

    <head>
    <title>Your Scrolling Message</title>
    <script language="JavaScript">
    <!-- Hide the script from old browsers --
    function scrollit(seed)
    {
    var m1 = " YOUR MESSAGE TEXT GOES HERE ";
    var msg=m1; var out = " ";
    var c = 0;

    if (seed > 100)
    {
    seed--;
    var cmd="scrollit(" + seed + ")";
    timerTwo=window.setTimeout(cmd,7);
    }
    else
    if (seed <= 100 && seed > 0)
    {
    for (c=0 ; c < seed ; c++)
    {
    out+=" ";
    }
    out+=msg;
    seed--;
    var cmd="scrollit(" + seed + ")";
    window.status=out;
    timerTwo=window.setTimeout(cmd,7);
    }
    else if (seed <= 0)
    {
    if (-seed < msg.length)
    {
    out+=msg.substring(-seed,msg.length);
    seed--;
    var cmd="scrollit(" + seed + ")";
    window.status=out;
    timerTwo=window.setTimeout(cmd,7);
    }
    else
    {
    window.status=" ";
    timerTwo=window.setTimeout("scrollit(100)",75);
    }
    }
    }
    // --End Hiding Here -->
    </script>
    </head>

    <body BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#000000" LINK="#FF0000" VLINK="#000080" ALINK="#000080"
    onLoad="timerONE=window.setTimeout('scrollit(100)',500)">
    </body>
    </html>

    Just wondering if the above JavaScript for "text displayed on the browsers status bar" worked for you on your site

    Hope that it did . . . WebKat

    you could just do this:

    <body onload="window.status='Message goes here'">

    Althoguh it doesn't scroll, it still looks nice. For links, you could make it:

    <A href="somelink.html" onmouseover=window.status='Goes here on mouseover'" onmouseout="window.status=' '">

    Just touching up Arielladog's code:

    <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">code/font><HR><pre>&lt;A href="somelink.html" onmouseover="window.status='Goes here on mouseover';return true;" onmouseout="window.status='';return true;"&gt;[/code]

    For a complete discussion of this technique, check out my Mouseover FAQ article on Sausage Island.
