Vbulletin is my favorite, easy to modify/customize, great features, and professional

VB by far... but SMF is very nice for a free Board. I'd definately recommend it to anyone looking to save some money

For me PHPbb is the best because I am quite good with installation and stuff like that. VB is a good one and I like it too but I have no how, go about it. Maybe once I learn it, I would like it
And you missed one: PunBB (A very cool forum software though not free)

I like vB but was surprised how much bandwidth I found going through with the default setup.

I've only had a brief play around with phpBB and really didn't like it for customisation purposes, an area where vB is very user friendly IMHO.

vBulletin and phpBB are great. CommunityServer is also an excellent choice if you want blogging and photos as well.

I like SMF and vBulletin both. vBulletin is easy to setup and use. SMF I like because of the simple interface and step by step guide which is good for me. I think I have to learn phpBB also.

Have used both PhpBB and SMF, and much prefer SMF, its easier to manage, easier to update, requires a lot less manual coding, and at the moment is a lot less prone to spam than phpbb!

I just don't think Vanilla is all its cracked up to be, it feels simply different from the category > board layout that we are all so very used to
