    Image Map Redundant Text Links

    Hello

I have a client side image map on my site, and I am looking to provide some text links to go along with this for accessibility reasons. However, I would only like the text links to appear in place of the image if the images are disabled. IS there any way of doing this?

So far, i have the links in a div which i have positioned way off screen so normal users dont see it, but screen readers will. However there are still the users with images disabled to consider.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Chris

Image maps are accessible, so you don't have to duplicate the links. For users with images turned you need to make sure that you use the ALT attribute on each AREA tag. For the <img> that is being imagemapped, I guess the most appropiate is to use an empty ALT attribute. Make sure the <map> tag is after the image, not on the bottom of the document (Dreamweaver likes to do this), screenreaders read the literal order of the document.

yeh, all of that is fine, its just the WCAG guidelines say to provide text links at the same time. Can this be ignored then?
