Don't use ad-something.jpg for image file names!

Just a little warning about something I discovered today.

If you use the letters "ad" before the rest of a file name some browsers and ad blockers prevent the image from being displayed as they obviously perceive it to be an advert (ad).

Annoying, but true.

same goes for the word banner - also sometimes having an image within a folder called banner can trip the adblocks too.

Actually could have taken longer... but it surely could stump people with a little less problem solving intuition

Our file was ad-logo.jpg and we changed it to adesign-logo.jpg, so the ad would need to be seperated from the word with a "-" for it to trigger this (as far as our experience indicates).

Makes me wonder why anyone would still put the word "ad" or "banner" in anything relating to advertising. Maybe once everyone realises this we can start calling things ad-something because nobody will be using them anymore.

Because the vast vast vast vast vast majority of people don't even know that ad-blocker software exists. That and those of us that do almost certainly wouldn't click on their adverts anyway...

There are also some Web designers who put the words ad, advertisement, banner and whatnot so they WILL be blocked by the ad-blocker software. I know of one who does this myself .

Well, I would think that the individual who does this thinks he's doing the user a service by respecting his/her right not to view any ads if an ad-blocker is running.

Just my own opinion of course. Since I don't use the tactic, I will avoid hijacking this thread by not turning it into a discussion on the ethical use of file names .

I don't know if this was directed at me, but if you look at my signature, you'll notice that my company name is Allchorn Design. Hence the ad-logo.jpg.

Just defending my original post and motives behind posting. We haven't done many websites using advertising, but we know now, and if someone in the future has a company.... say "Alert Doorhinges", they don't put ad-logo.jpg as their logo on the site.

I wasn't informing you harden'd advert gurus ... you seem to know this obviously trivial (yet strangely important) fact.
