Inept coder seeks desired float effect

With my lamebrain coding I'm trying to get a floated div to behave the way I want it to and clear some preceding divs. I suspect my code is conforming to the specs but I'm too stupid to see it.

    Example with notes: http://glvr.com/test/float/

Thanks. This looks to be good stuff - way beyond me currently and I'll hold onto the info as I learn. Thanks again, appreciated.
