Unhappy Sometimes it's a cruel world...

Okay, so sitepoint made me aware of DOCTYPES and the DTD. I put in a fair amount of studying of XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets I work hard on one of my pages to bring it up to speed with XHTML so it can be validated. One of the things I learned studing XHTML is to always use lower case for your tags e.g. <p> my paragraph </p> NOT <P> my paragraph </P>. No problem, I usually always use only lower case for my tags anyway.

So I'm working hard in notepad cleaning up discrepancies the validator told me about. I up load the file I've "cleaned up" to my hosting site. I see a minor error and take a look at the source code. Every single one of my html tags are now mysteriously UPPER CASE OUCH!

    Now, what's up with that!?

Sometimes it's a cruel world... but you gotta love it, maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

    Dave

ps It does feel good knocking a little rust off and working on getting back into the swing of things. Oh yea!

Hehe, so, was this a rhetorical post?

Maybe your FTP app is converting... prob not. Sounds weird though.

Hopefully you saved a backup copy.

Big ups on taking the plunge to xhtml land. Keep up the good work.

    to uppercase

    Let me guess, IE?
If you save a page using file -> save as with IE it will change the mark-ups tags to uppercase, and add tbody tags to tables, and remove "closing" tags on elements with no inner text ie. <br /> and <hr /> become <BR> and <HR>
If you save mark-up with IE, file -> edit (with notepad), Then from the new window file -> save as you should be OK.
    (if this is what happened)

What are you using to upload your files, and who is hosting your site for you?

I'm hosting this one on networksolutions and using their file manager to upload.
Mittineague gave me a possible clue as to what might have happened. I'm gonna check it out and I'll report back if I nail the cause down.

If that's the case, then (assuming you used Notepad to create your pages) you'll want to look into either www.pspad.com or www.gena01.com/win32pad (PSPad and Win32Pad, respectively--both are open source), and then head over to http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ and download FileZilla. It's a handy FTP application. I use it all the time .

You nailed it Man!!! The experiment worked. Fatigue blunder! It is stuff like this that causes the FAA to put strict time limitations on pilots. Worked all day till I'm about wore out. One of the times I need to save, instead of saving by view code in notepad I, like a big tired dummy, click save as on internet explorer. Yep, the fun begins now. But, at least I know what cause my little problem.

Stories like this bring to mind the old saying, "Don't count your chickens before they hatch." Then when stuff like this happens you realize you are better off not counting them until they hatch, are raised, butchered, cooked and ate. Then, if they don't give you a belly ache, I reckon you can count them. And, just because you see the finish line in sight, it doesn't mean you'll successfully cross it.

    Oh, well...

Have a great night everyone. It's been a long day and the wife just got home... gotta go.

Ooooh, that sounds way better than IPswitch_WS FTP Professional.

(currently use that for my FTP stuffs... just switched from the Mac world, so still looking to find the best apps.)

    For sure!

    Thanks for offer.

Heck, maybe we should start a thread in the Computer Hardware and Software forum?

Hands down the best FTP client I have ever used on any platform (but is Win only) is SmartFTP - it is simply badass:

DBR - Why are you using view-source anyway? You've already got the source on your PC, after all, you just uploaded it

I saw your mountainbike on your site... That's GNARLY man! Here are a couple of my rides photojournal'd

I'm not totally clear on your question. Right now notepad is my favored method to code html. I view the results in my browser and use view-source to edit and look at my code. Is there something I'm missing here?
