How to Attract Traffic to your site?

Hey guy's i'm just wondering how do people get traffic to their websites? Such sites like Slashdot, Sourceforge, Sitepoint, etc.... they must get like millions of hits a day? How do they do it, and how do people get the funds to do this?

Just curious, I'm sure people would like to know
    Thanks

Heh, not quite millions of hits a day, more like millions a month.

But you get traffic to your site through a variety of ways. Advertising, Search Engines, Directories, link partnerships.

I will add to that list of "traditional" means of getting traffic. Use you site in your email signature. Pass out business cards. Someone posted a great idea once about leaving stacks of bumper stickers around.

You could also join professional associations to get the name out there. Write an article for an e-zine or web site. Get T-shirts made with your logo on them. Some people get a lot of traffic from word-of-mouth.

Places like SitePoint use all these methods (well, maybe not the bumper stickers) and then some. Getting traffic is a process, one medium won't do it for you. You need to be everywhere.
