Hey everyone, can I get a few opins please?
I've tasked myself to create an intranet webpage for our company division, which consists of 3 departments in a "triage" if you will. I am staying with the default conservative-white company solid background, but other than that I have leeway to design whatever I want. I work in an automitve manufacturer environment, so ther is very little page design input. Is there a "how to design an intranet page" site or book available, that offers business layouts and suggestions for internal company use? Thanks guys!

There are several books that cover "how to" design a web site. Browse your local bookstore. You may find, however, that you will need to get much more specific as the site progresses.

Intranet and Internet site design does not have to be all that different. The biggest advantage with a closed intranet is that you know which browsers, computers, operating systems, etc. are being used.

    IMHO,

    Hello,

Here's a nice article about creating good interfaces. May apply for all webmasters.

Hey thanks guys! Nice to know that everyone is T-1 at my work, but don't want to go hog-wild with flash, etc. Need to be conservative and toe the company line. Unfortunately, most good intranet sites are behind firewalls..

btw... your link is dead above, Netscape.

    First of all... http://www.builder.com/Graphics/UserInterface/

An excellent place for intranet development is http://www.useit.com . He predicts that a bad design for an intranet could cost a company with 100 employees about $6000/wk because of the time needed to sort out the design. One sentence: Jakob Nielsen is the UI god.

With your T-1 Internet Connection and your 10/100 mbps ethernet connection, your Intranet should not look like any normal website. You can build a nice Web Application fairly easily. First though before we can give truly good advice we need to know what your specifications are. What Platform are you using, what browser, plug-ins, Office Software, Network Servers, Internet Server.

What are the users going to be doing on the Intranet? Is it just a link to the web or are you going to post up to date info from the communications and marketing departments? Do you need instant messaging or chat-like features? Workgroup documents? Video conferencing? What about off-site or traveling employees? How are they going to see the intranet? These are all things you need to ask before you design the interface.
