What on-page factors constitute a good quality inbound link?

My first post but I have been lurking for a while and have read a lot of the useful information here!

I would like to have your opinions on what on-page factors contribute to a good quality link. I have read that too many outbound links will dilute the quality of the link and that the page topic should be related to the linked-to page. Are there any other factors do you think? Like keywords in the title or in close proximity to the link for example?

Anchor text of the link is very important.

If the page itself ranks on the terms you're hoping to rank on that is definitely a good sign.

And you are right, the more outbound links, the less PR that is passed in each.

From the Search Engine Optimization FAQ:

    What is a quality link?

    A quality link is:

    1) On topic (The page linking to your page is about the same main topic)
    2) Ranked well for the keyphrase you are after (In the top 1,000)
    3) Has high PR (PR 4 or higher)

I left out high traffic because that is irrelevant from an SEO point of view. But if you're looking at the big picture that would be #4.

I have heard that links which appear as part of normal text, e.g. in the middle of a paragraph, are better than links in a list of other links.

Disclaimer: This is only hearsay. It might be true or it might not.

I would highly doubt it - there are completely legit reasons to list links... within reason.

That's true but it doesn't mean one type of link couldn't be ranked higher than the other.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm backing up your call that it's all rumour.
