    Cheapest Dedicated Server?

    Hi all,

I am looking to start renting a dedicated server. Min. specs are:

    128 mb of ram
    12 gb/month bandwidth
    t3 or higher bandwidth
    linux
    450 sparc iii/800 celeron/800 duron
    15gb hd
It also has to be allowed to run stuff like a CounterStrike server, a proprietary mail system, and a couple of other homebrew services..

Other than that, I don't care. Other than uk2.net, which is the cheapest host anyone can find? So far, I think rackshack.net wins the price for the best perf/price ratio so far .. anyone have any experience with them?

    Thanks for your input!

    Take a look at interserver.net.

    Good Luck,
    Lamar

<edit: Just as Steb (in the post below this one) said, be sure to check with interserver that counterstrike is okay.

have you asked if rackshack.net will allow a counterstrike server? they dont allow IRC servers and some other background processes, not sure of the exact policies..

BTW - I completely recommend rackshack, using them for my dedicated - raq4 with 512 mb ram. hosting 30+ sites, no problems (well..after I upgraded the ram anyway..before that it was stretched to capacity quite often)

I'll be sure to check with all hosts if they allow background processes like that.
I assume that as long as I don't go over my bandwidth limitations, it will be allowed, but I'll email and make sure.

Thanks a lot for all of your replies, and keep'em coming!

With dedicated servers is there typically a fee to setup DNS entries or a monthly fee for DNS entries?

if someone happens to stumble on a host that allows Counter-Strike to be run, care to post here?
    I'd be interested in that.

I've used Rackshack in the past, and have been generally happy with them -- best deal around, if you ask me!

As far as hosting game servers goes, I don't see why they wouldn't let you. In fact I asked them about hosting a Quake 3 server once, and was informed that I could host any legal game server fine.

hmmm ... What exactly was their definition of legal? As in "Legal means if it doesn't take up ANY of our precious bandwidth it's ok" or legal as in permitted by law ...

If the games server is one of the more important things why not goto one of the sites that host game servers. They normaly cost between 30-50 a month.

    you might have something there

I'd thought of that as well, and it's a good idea, however I decided that it'd be nice to also have a proper webhosting server in a high-speed data center, as well as a proper remote shell acct that I could brag about ...

What you're looking for will cost a lot. GriffinRun has the best servers you can buy fr gaming and they are pretty high... but wanting mail and high speed web hosting... I hope you have some deep pockets.
