I believe the car was invented in France? Could have that wrong but certainly the first ever recorded car journey was on Shooters Hill in London. There were many cars before young Henry, he merely removed imagination and introduced mass production.

However, interestingly the US can take credit for one of it's own inventing the CD!

Sorry to burst the bubble Jeroen.

Although to play devils advocate again,

Alright, let's go forward a little to the 17th Century in Holland. The Dutch can probably legitimately be credited with the creation of the first land vehicles that were powered by neither humans nor animals. Their first creations were pretty much carts with sails, but these were soon abandoned in favor of carriages with mini-windmills mounted onto them. The windmills were geared to the wheels. Alas, this fine idea never really did catch on, maybe because people felt stupid cruising around on a moving windmill, but more probably because wind wasn't really readily available, and if it ain't blowin' -- you ain't goin'. It was not long before windmills were returned to the land and the Dutch got around via a much smarter, more comfortable <grin> means of locomotion -- wooden shoes.

If anyone has a problem with the Dutch ruling the world, then can take it on with me .

The Dutch are also responsible for inventing the first hand press (although the Germans like to see it otherwise) and are the best water-engineers in the whole wide world.

The Dutch lions are victorious wherever they go!!!

A lot of inventions can be claimed by more that one person from different points in time. Inventions often start out as theory.

You could say that the internet has been evolving for the last 40 years, when a hypertext system was first created. You could, if you like, claim it was invented 20 years earlier than that, when hypertext theory was coming into discussion, or even a century before that when authors were beginning to use references to other works within their works.

This is why most countries claim to have invented the cd. It depends on how far you trace it back - you could say a CD would not have been created if it weren't for the floppy disk, or the grammophone, or the digital audio tape. Many inventors can claim to be middle men in the 'missing link' between these and CDs, and each of these could call themself the inventor that enabled the CD to be created.

    Same with the TV.

I must say that the Dutch are very lucky. They live in a very sophisticated society. Education standards are higher than anywhere else and the standard of living is great. It is also a very safe place to live.

I never said that Ford invented the car in America. I only insinuated that it wasn't invented in the Netherlands, didn't I. You should really stop being so prejudicial, H.

Yes, Netherlands or Holland (both refer to the flat small piece of land in North-West Europe, across the North sea from England) are the names for the country itself. Dutch is the name of the language we speak down here, and the Dutch is the name of the people.

Uhm, invention? I assume we're talking about creating the thing right? Sure, I can have hundreds of theories but who says they will work? Philips invented the CD, period

Also, I think it was Philips who also invented the casette, not sure about that one though. But for your information, Philips has the best researchcenter in the world

And Heineken ownz, oook..only 4% of the world but hey?! We're a small country

    </pimpage>

Serious though, for a small country as The Netherlands we are really present in some important things in the world..it's amazing

mmj - We might have the best education in the world, but it's a true disaster. You don't want to talk to me about the education here in The Netherlands because I will talk non-stop for two days without mentioning a reason why it sucks so bad!

[backing up Jeroen on his statement about Dutch education mode]

Hmm... school is like a lifelong holiday. I am required to do nothing, nada, zip all day long. I have much better things to occupy my time with!

I think we're all much more in debt for the greeks rather than for anyone else.

But for example Edison (American) invented the electric lightbulb and the grammophone (i think it was this), and helped perfect Bell's telephone.

How many students does this school have.

There you have it, Dutch isn't so hard, in fact, it has a potential of becoming a superior world language .
