    Not to forget Van Morrison!
The Doors and Pink Floyd will probably go down in history as well.

    Oh lord, you're joking right?

These bands will all be forgotten in 20 years. I already forgot about Blind Melon until you mentioned them. The Black Crowes? Not a chance.

We're talking legends here, not music of the '90s.

Almost everyone mentioned, except the 90s rockers (Oasis, et al.), I agree with. Most notably U2 (hell yea!), Pink Floyd, Clapton (BTW, who REALLY wrote "I Shot the Sherrif"? Bob Marley?) and as much as I can't stand Madonna, she's a legend. Glad someone mentioned Elton John, although he makes my skin crawl.

But what about these guys? Jimmy Ray Vaughn? How could we forget the musical LEGEND Billy Joel! God I love that man! eek: but not in that way!). And here's one noone thinks about because he's so associated with Smashmouth, but he's been dancing on his guitar for decades...Carlos Santana!!!

That's why I headed the comment Possible Future Rock Legends

Blind Melon's lead vocalist Shannon Hoon is dead...so that gives the group automatic 'legend points'

If you told people The Doors would be legends in the mid 70's everyone probably would have disagreed.

That falls in there with Oasis, REM etc. I doubt they'll be legends. Has been's maybe...not legends. From this era, the only band I'd say could come close to legendary status is Dave MAtthews Band, in my humble opinion.

Duke Ellington, Theloneous Monk, John Coultrane, the list is too long. Jazz must surely be the most significant musical development of the 20th Century.

Of course long since departed is the man, Jimmy Hendrix.

But for out-and-out rock legend, one man stands above all others...

Syd Barrett, the laughing madcapper himself!

I couldn't agree more, some nice additions to our list. Syd Barrett is indeed a legend slash space-cadet, the man facinates me.

[Pink Floyd's 'Piper's at the Gates of Dawn' is a great album]

As for his solo work, you can't beat tunes like "Octopus" and "Golden Hair". A limited edition DVD is available that was filmed by one of Syd's Art School buddies when they were hang'n. It's likely terrible.

Also of note, U2's Elevation Tour is coming on DVD. <-mmm gonna get it

Radiohead - hell yes. U2 also. REM I don't think cut the mustard. Creole, with your Beatles comment......choose your weapon sir! The guy who mentioned that Freddy was no longer performing...well, there's a good reason for that...

Most of the people mentioned are already music legends to be honest. Pink Floyd, Marley, Cream, U2 (we could go on...The Who, The Stones etc etc). I think the question related to "legends of the future". Only one band in recent times has had a level of success that seemed illogical and stupified critics. Much though it irks me to say it, for shere marketing genius, "The Spice Girls" will be in the anuls of music legend.

Excuse my ignorance, but who the heck are the Dave Matthews Band???

Barenakedladies & Weezer! Are you joking?? Couple of good songs each, that's it.

U2, although I don't like them, I have to agree. As a big fan of Oasis, I think they've made some great songs, but they never made in the States. I think REM are great though.

    Radiohead??????

I'd be willing to bet that they'll be forgotten 5 years after they've stopped making music. Quite frankly, I think they're the most depressing group ever.

Guns n Roses and Nirvana don't appeal to the masses, I can only think of one Guns n Roses song, and that's a cover.

You don't know Dave Matthews?!?! http://www.davematthewsband.com

They are one of the best creative modern bands. They are really awesome. Anyone that can incorporate a violin in their grooves is awesome. And I agree about G n' R. They will be legends too, but I don't think history will smile too fondly on them. Afdter all Axl Rose has a bad reputation of pissing everyone off.

I'd consider bands such as black sabbath, led zepplin and pink floyd, the doors, etc to be legends already..

In the future, I could see singer/songwriters being up there.. James Taylor, Carole King, Carly Simon, etc.

As for rock.. rage against the machine
