Is AJAX Suitable For This Task?

I'm able to do this in AJAX, but I'm wondering if I should...

In the left DIV is navigation that lets users drill down to a specific author out of thousands of choices.

In the right DIV is content - typically the works of the selected author.

With AJAX, I can load the right DIV content without reloading the page or disturbing the left navigational DIV.

Are there drawbacks in using AJAX for this? Will the site lose search engine traction? If so, what are the alternatives?

    Thanks!

My choice is usually to create a non-Javascript version first using normal anchor tags and letting the page refresh each time. After that, use a function to remove the non-Javascript navigation and create the AJAX navigation.

Search engines will pick up the traditional navigation, and users with Javascript enabled will gain the added functionality of AJAX.
