    Yet another question about .htaccess

    I am using

    IndexIgnore .htaccess .htpasswd

In my .htaccess file, yet when requested from the browser (www.servername.com/.htaccess) the htaccess file still shows up. What can I do to prevent this?

For trying to password protect a directory with .htaccess and .htpasswd on a Cobalt RaQ server, the Cobalt Knowledge Base has an example .htaccess file. The first line of the file is:

    # Access file

The Knowledge Base says this line prevents the file from being accessed via a browser. You might want to give it a try, but the rest of the example .htaccess file doesn't work, that that line might not either. Please note that the Knowledge Base info is for Cobalt servers, so might not work on any others.

Try looking at http://www.apache.org for the answer.

The reason your file was accessible is because that line just prevents those files from being listed on a directory listing which is generated when no suitable index.html or equivalent exists.
