    Do you use @Home???

I just heard on NPR that @Home is declaring bankruptcy. They could shut down service as early as tomorrow. A bankruptcy court will be the ones to decide if they are allowed to cease their service. An estimated 4 million people could be affected.

What will you do? What will I do?

    Creole,

lasttime I heard it wasn't @Home itself but rather Excite, which powers Excite@Home is declaring bankruptcy which....like itec said...just means someone else will throw their moolah in with @Home...

Sketch is right. I have @home. We received a letter in the mail from AT@T the other day outlinning whats gonna happen.

AT@T is trying to purchase the Excite@home backbone. If they are successful, the service interuption will be minimal. If they are not...then it looks like I will have to find another alternative.

On a different note...OMG SKETCH IS A MENTOR!

    Congrats

The only way it's affected me thusfar is that I had to change my email from mynamegoeshere@home.com to mynamegoeshere@shaw.ca. So to answer your question, Maelstrom, yeah, the Canadian version is affected too.

this is actually kinda old news. Excite I think already filed or started filing as much as a month or more ago. I was at this meeting with this DSL guy and he was gloating over it.

But ya... service isn't really in danger (yet).

by the way when a company goes bankrupt they don't suddenly disappear. They simply have their debts forgiven and have to agree to a buttload of things (audits etc).

Contrary to some of you, I'm actually pretty concerned. I've only used Comcast@Home for two weeks now, but service could be stopped Friday.
The squabble puts Excite@Home's fate with bankruptcy court Judge Thomas Carlson, who is scheduled to hear creditors' arguments Friday. Carlson will decide whether Excite@Home has the right to shut down its cable access service and, if so, how long the transition period should be to allow its partners to migrate customers to another network.
    From: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1004-200-8010578.html

You see, this is up to a judge and if he thinks @Home deserves more time. This doesn't have as much to do with AT&T buying the company. Crossing my fingers. This is the only broadband available in my area.

I understand that, but if the courts agree to it, they plan on turning off their service, which would leave 4 million people without internet access.

5 years ago, or even 3 years ago, this would not have been that big of a deal. Today it could bankrupt small businesses, many of which operate from their homes. Think about it, not only is it the @Home accounts that would be shut down but the @Work accounts as well. Those were specifically designed so that people could run servers from them.

I've been using rogers@home for a very very long time now. Since about midway through this year, they've been pretty spectacular (especially when compared to how they used to be.) I don't use them for any email stuff though, so I haven't had any of the email problems people have been complaining about for a long time.

I believe rogers is doing the same thing Shaw (especially considering how friendly they've been recently) is doing and just moving away from @home and taking over the ISP responsibities themselves (whatever that all entails.. I'm not sure, but hopefully you get what I'm saying). Not sure if Rogers will be better or worse than rogers@home, but I'm hoping for the former

actually i sort of like it

I have Shaw@Home and since the bankruptcy thing Shaw has opened a new datacenter and are handling all email and webspace themselves. Why do I like it? because their control panel to manage email addresses and webspace not to mention their online billing system is so much easier to use and very stylish unlike the old black and white Excite@home control panel. My email has also changed from @home.com to @shaw.ca

Okay, Excite @ Home has gone bankrupt and will shut down in some form or another.

@Home is delicensing and declaring insolvency (bankruptcy)

Shaw & Rogers @ Home are buying up their backbones and have been working feverishly for the past 3 weeks to make the switch to their own in-house systems.

Rogers has actually transitioned this week to their own system (though there have been an insane amount of problems).

I'm not aware of where Shaw is at, nor where other licensees are at...

do alot of people have access to cable in australia, access in the Uk has been prety limited but I think its improving, I would cry for a year if I lost my cable modem now, but as long as the 56k always worked I could cry and surf.

not really, we only have 1.5 telephone companies that have there own network, we have squilions of resellers for those 1 and half networks (telstra being the main one, and optus being the .5) telstra hate spending money, so there slow to get cable going outside of metro areas, optus on the otherhand is far better at bringing services, its just they cant afford to run cable all around australia... (up untill mid 90`s telstra was the only telco company)

I could never go back to dial up now!
There was a report in todays SMH that Telstra has been ordered to reduce the cost of their wholsale prices of broadband to resellers to ensure that there is competition so with any luck prices might come down in the near future.

well, if your still online, you should be fine as it the deadline was 3 hours ago.
A friend of mine who works for @home:
Thge judge gave excite@home permission to shut down as early as midnight PST(3amEST)
So... If Excite decides to shut down at that time... there will be 4.1 million less people on the internet.

Well, last night at midnight my cable worked. This morning it does not.

I use ATT, they said they'll either buy excite or switch us to their own network. We get credit for 2 free days for every 1 day or interruption and it could take 1-14 days (probably business days too).

    Annoying.
