joke sites, and the next big thing???
I have been noticing a lot of new joke sites popping up all over the place. I have a feeling it has some sort of relationship with Kevin's php and mysql book and his use of a joke site example.
Does anyone know what kind of examples he will be using if he writes another book? This way I can do it before it becomes cool

Actually, he's been working on a new book with a higher skill level. Each script in the book teaches you how you can be nice to RKuhle. For example:
Chapter 1. Buy RKuhle beer.
Chapter 2. Find RKuhle hot blonde.
Chapter 3. Bow before RKuhle.
And guess what? I've been given the honors of writing the foreward!Ryan Kuhle - A Proud Advisor - Got Questions? Just Ask!

I think it is kind of like when you get a new car. You suddenly notice a lot of those cars. It isn't true just the perception.

Yes Maelstrom may be right, because it does happen when you get something new and you notice that everyone is going for it.
May be MissingArrow is right too - because I've also started to notice this.TinyPlanet.org

theres lots of them, and a lot of money to be made. I know a few people on high 6 figure income from their joke sites, so its definately possible to make stacks of cash from them.

Joke sites have a general demographic, and are entertainment sites. Any site with a general demographic doesn't do well unless it charges for content. I'd be very suprised to hear anyone is making 6 figures off a joke site in this economy. Especially high 6 figure, unless thats in Lira thats unbelievable. A company pulling in that much, maybe, but not an individual. If there is its just one person, not few people.
High six figures is nearly a million dollars.
With their general demographic a joke site can get maybe .3 cpm, if that.
$300 per million impressions.
They'd need 277 million impressions a month to make that much.
There might be one person out there who has managed to either branch out from just jokes or somehow gotten better advertising. But any site with a general demographic is going to get high traffic and low advertising revenues.Chris Beasley - I publish content and ecommerce sites.

ok, maybe I exaggerated high 6 figures - $3xx,xxx I think it was
one guy, not a corporation..
believe me its possible. its the daily newsletter that they send that is the key, not impressions. they are almost worthless, as you say

There are several people who make over $100,000 a year, some about $400,000 a year just off a joke site. One person, no more.
There will be people who know who I'm talking about, but I'm not naming any names. I know Steb knows who I'm talking about.
I've personally seen a check that was about $90,000 (not in real life, it was scanned), that somebody made off a joke site in 3 1/2 months.
There is also one I know of who has bought a house, brand new furniture, and a new 2002 BWM Z3 (around $60,000) all paid for by his humor website.
It's not just banner impressions that make you money. I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but most people make much more than $.30 CPM. We can get $.40-.50 off banner impressions alone, plus you have the affiliate programs. And then you need to take into account the newsletters

Yep, I know of several as well. I also am good friends with a few people who make a decent living through their joke/entertainment websites and newsletters. As Alan mentioned, the targeted affiliate programs are what can really cash in.
The term "advertising revenue" is very broad, it could be one of many mediums.Ryan Kuhle - A Proud Advisor - Got Questions? Just Ask!
