    1-9

    I find this fairly amusing.

If you search for wilderness survival on MSN I'm in slots 1-9

(The actual first slot is a paid listing)

Impressive stuff. I thought I'd done well to get #8 for UK Hotels, but 2-9 is well impressive.

Bit silly, I'd agree. Why dont these other SEs follow Google's lead?

    well technically its 2-10

But since the first one is a sponsored listing I don't think it should count.

    Question:

Did you use Inktomi submission for all those pages or did they get spidered and ranked on their own?

MSN uses LookSmart for primary results.

So no, I don't use Inktomi.

A few months ago I had numbers 1-99 on Looksmart UK for 'football'. It's 26-40 and 45-to-something-like-150 now.
It's all about optimising every page, and clearly defining your website sections, enabling editors to deep-link into your site. Took me bloody ages to sort the pages out.
If you get a 'nice' editor who is conscentious enough to do the work involved in deep-linking, you are laughing.
The editor of Looksmart UK's football section is clearly some kind of superstar, even if the rankings are dropping bit by bit.
