    Advice on a viral campaign

Last week I created a website to promote a short animation of dancing bunny I made. I am hoping to get it to go viral, like the dancing baby, etc. The site address is in my sig.

My promotional efforts included emailing my friends, posting in forums, submitting to video and humor sites, notifying blogs, and even some popup and Google ads. Consequently, my visitors spiked early in the week. But soon after, daily visitors went down. Now they are holding steady at a much lower level. But it does not seem to be going viral. Its been seen by about 6000 people now, and been up for a little over a week. If it was going to viral, would it have started happening by now?

Also, any feedback you have on how to improve the site or the promotional efforts are greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Shawn

Well I can't get it to play and I'm in IE, that could be a problem.

I think that is an occasional glich on Revver's servers. They are still in beta and I've noticed the video hasn't loaded a few times. I have had friends check it on several different computers and it usually plays fine.

So that is definitely a problem, but I don't think its the main problem. And Revver is kind of key to the plan, since they share the ad revenue. Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

    Thanks,
    Shawn

I find its lacking a sort of viral component that usually intend a reciever to pass on to others immediately to make it viral, it should also contain a message which encourages the user to send the message to others.

Unless the OP has just added it, you missed the show your friends message somehow.

It's a cute idea but I see two potential problems.

    1. Although the press play is an arrow to the "play button" on the recorder, my first idea was by pressing the call out, the video would start. Luckily my brain caught up and I did press play and did see the video. However, how many of your visitors are missing the bunny boogie simply because when they click on the call out, they fail to click the play button on the recorder? Remember, you are always one click away from losing your traffic.

Although the call-out with the arrow is cute as a bunny I think you would be better off to make your instructions idiot proof.

    2. The first time through, the ad that showed was adult in nature. Now your site is something I might want to send to my daughter to share with my grandkids. However, as long as there is any adult-natured content on the site, I won't do it. I'd get more kid, family oriented ads.

Thanks, Shyflower. I just changed the "Press Play" arrow to be permanently on.

As for problem #2 ("adult" ads), I am working on it. None are pornographic "adult", but most are geared toward adults. I've asked Revver to include some controls to opt-out of certain ads, but it has not happened yet.

    Thanks,
    Shawn

Don't mean to clog your thread - but that's a cool little bunny.

    Thanks, Clenard

I submitted a press release via PRWeb that came out today. I've never done a press release before, so I don't know what to expect. Now I'm out of ideas. As etechsupport pointed out, it may just not be right for viral. Worst case, it has been great experience for the next one.

    Thanks,
    Shawn

I am using IR..but it requires me to download Apple Quicktime...it will be better if you can make it play on something else, flash or something else...ppl might not like to download something, which they might not require in future...

Also the best Viral Marketing tool around is Adwords & Articles...you can write an article as to how you made it or something about it & submit them to article directories....

Thanks for the feedback, submit2please. I am not familiar with "IR".. is that a typo for "IE"? The Apple Quicktime has been an issue. Hopefully Flash will be an option for the ad supported video soon.

The press release did not generate much traffic. Adwords did, but I was spending more getting traffic than I was selling ad space. I thought a viral effect would make up for it, but it did not seem to be happening.

At this point I think the content is the main problem. It is cute, but not the the kind of thing that gets passed along in 2006. I am working on a new one that will hopefully have that "special something".

    Thanks,
    Shawn

    Not everyone has quicktime installed.
I would consider converting it to flash or similar.

    Just an idea,

    Tim

Yes I meant IE....anyways...i agree with you, you should work on the content..that will help you a lot..one thing you can write about is the bunny..what made you think of it or something of that sort....

Also Press Release or Article submission will work, for a small duration though...the crack lies where you submit them....you know...right place right time!!

I don't think you're right about silly stuff not being passed along. You should see my email and I have loads of silly stuff in my favorites just to give me a smile when I need one! Look at the popularity of silly stuff like Badger badger! It went over the top.

Maybe you should look at some of the popular things and read the news reports about them to see what they did (and do) to become popular pass-arounds.

    Here's a few that I have bookmarked:

    Badger Badger
The Birdhouse in Doctor Ashens Soul
    Kill Some Time
    Tomatoes are Evil

A new one - Alien Cartoon Band

I am trying a new one. It is a cartoon band music video - the link is in my sig. It is a bit racy so be careful where you view it. It pokes fun at the blatant sexuality in music videos. Its probably rated PG.

I think this one might be more successful than the bunny because:

    1. It is slightly controversial.
    2. There is more to it.
    3. The advertising better matches the content.
    4. The band has better merchandising potential (Ipod videos, ringtones, t-shirts)

Thanks again for all the feedback. I really am listening. Unfortunately, some things like video file formats and ad content are out of my control with this revenue model.

BTW Shyflower, I think "Badgers" is brilliant. I wish I had Weebl's sense of humor. I will check out the other links.

    Thanks,
    Shawn
