HTML editors and CSS

Hi,

does anyone have experience with some HTML editor and CSS? I have some HTML that has to be edited by users with no HTML knowledge, but I wouldn't want it to
1. destroy the existing markup of the piece being edited (list tag with nested tags come to mind)
2. destroy the layout of the site because of the funny things the user tried

Does anybody have good experiences with an HTML editor for those cases?

thanks for the replies. Maybe I didn't make myself clear, or I am in deep sh*t :-)

I've got a system that generates a diagnosis, but that has to be changed sometimes. The diagnosis is generated and has markup. When it has to be changed, I would like an editor in the site to change it, like for instance FCKEditor.

I haven't used FCKEditor yet, but I'm afraid that the users will be able to screw up the layout. Does anyone have any experience with such editors and can comment? Are there any where you can disable all but some basic functionality?

I believe that TinyMCE can be customised to your heart's content. In my experience it doesn't mess up existing markup. http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/

BTW, it's what they've used as the wysiwyg editor in Wordpress 2.

I have never done anything but look at FCKEditor and TinyMCE, but for me, FCKEditor seemed to load quite a bit faster.

TimH, can you report back after your tries of HTML editors that don't destroy markup (possibly FCKEditor, TinyMCE, htmlArea)?

BTW I share your seek ("I have some HTML that has to be edited by users with no HTML knowledge"): too many HTML editors do unexpectedly alter the HTML code when, using their WYSIWYG view, you just change a few words or even letters in the contents; so you have to go to Source view, which is a waste in that case. Careful writers end up losing time - while some less careful ones, failing even to see the problem, jump on bashing the first ones.
