    SWD,

It might help if we knew what type of newletter it was. Is it monthly, weekly, daily, tips, webstie update?

I would recomend reading The Complete Guide to E-Zine Publishing a SitePoint article.

Go to the section on Pop Ups I agree completely. I was nervous adding one for my newsletters but it has been the best so far, and I have only recieved minimal complaints (2).

Do a search on SitePoint too there have been some other really good articles with tips.

    Good Luck,
    Dan

Have you tried adding a pop up, listing it in directories, add a subscribe box, swap (or buy) e-mail ads, or form partnerships to get more subscribers?

I would focus on your site's current visitors first.
    1) I would redesign the newsletter box on your site. The email field is really small and that will make people less likely to fill it out.

**Maybe you could submit your site to the site review forum, after you review three other sites. Those guys are good at picking up on these things**

    2) With the Pop Up, I would go to the article I cited in my above post. Use the code they provide, granted you have to modify it for what you want on it. Then place this on your pages (it tells you how), so when people leave your site they will get the option to subscribe. If people liked what they say on your site they will subscribe.

    3) As silverado said submit to some directories. Do a search on goole for ezine directories. I would submit by hand and not pay for a subscription service but that is your choice.

All of this is worthless if the content is worthless. If the content is good people will share it with friends, they will advertise for you. If you content is bad people will not forward it to friends, and people will not stay subscribed for too long.

The guys who write the ezine promotion articles can say it better then me that is why I would read all the past articles. search sitepoint.com for newsletters and they will all come up.

Hope that is specific enough for you if you have any other questions let me know,

    Dan

I agree with all the comments above. Start off with your regular visitors, if your newsletter is good they will spread the word and other people will sign up for it too!

    Be patient, it takes time.

Try www.ezine-tips.com for an excellent weekly newsletter.

You could try implementing a cookie-based pop-up window to promote your newsletter. SitePoint does this using this code and I recently implemented it on my site. See http://sports-central.org/popup.shtml (normally is in smaller window).

thanks, the problem is I already have a pop window that votes for my site in a top10 , but I have it with cookie so It will appear only once.

Anyway I hate pop-ups so I will just wait to get a good rank and then put the newsletter one!

Good hunch about not running too many pop-ups...nothing's a bigger turnoff, in my opinion. Still surprises me how many bigger websites still bombard their visitors with them though.

a pop up REALLY helps up subscribers..

My newsletter count was hanging around 500 for ages then I added a small pop up and within 2 or so weeks I have close to 800!!!!!

Also I think probably the most annoying thing is when you have to physically highlight and delete the "username here" field.. It will probably confuse a few people too..

Leave it blank or use some onfocus script to have it dissapear as the user clicks on the box..

I might have to try that on a few clients' sites...right now one of them is lingering at the 200 mark. Granted, it's a webshop.

    Pop ups and wrong e-mails

Dont know if anybody has more than one address in their e-mail software (eudora, outlook etc.)

But if anyone has, have they had the problem of pop up software taking an e-mail address that you dont check anymore?

    I've got 5 different e-mail addresses

A pop up took an older e-mail address that was still on my software, that e-mail box had 6 e-mails before I noticed

And I was going to delete them straight away before I checked again.

Apart from that there good, straight forward and simple to use

But you got to ask how many people are actually getting the e-mail in the right box, at the right time or without being deleted for being in an old box

Well, you were talking about using pop ups to increase subscribers

So I told you about my experience of subscribing to newsletters using pop ups

After all, you want subscribers to actually read the newsletter dont you? Its not much good sitting in an old e-mail box

which bit did you not find relevant?

hmmm, I guess you changed gears on me, that's all!

I've never had a site steal an email addy though...I was of the thinking we were discussing using pop-up boxes to advertise the subscription list (and get the visitor to sign up voluntarily). I wasn't thinking about a site stealing the information!!

    Anyhow, carry on!
