Help with JavaScript Dropdown Menu opens behind other layers/objects

I set up a JavaScript horizontal dropdown menu based on the code from Sitepoint's JavaScript Anthology (Chapter 15). My menu branches open behind other objects/layers on my page, unless they are kept well below them. This leaves a big unusable gap on the page.

I'd appreciate any advice on setting the dropdown menu to always stay on top of any other objects/layers.

    Thanks!

Have a look at the z-index CSS property.

Note though that this elements will not appear above a <select> in IE (bug).

This was JavaScript/CSS horizontal menu from the JavaScript Anthology. I found that if I removed the Dreamweaver layers appearing below the menu and position them manually, then the menu does come to the front, overlapping as it should.
    Thanks
