I don't know if this is a javaScript question or not... but anyway...

What exactly is a "longdesc link", and how does it work??

    longdesc link

No, it's not javascript. It has to do with accessibilty.
    * alt is mandatory and provides replacement text.
    * title is optional and provides useful additional information.
    * longdesc is optional and links to a description of the image.
if you can't provide sufficient information in the alt and title attributes, you can provide detailed information regarding the image using longdesc (rarely used BTW, but a W3C recommendation nonetheless).
eg. An image of a map showing driving directions.
