Keep Image Background Transparent in PhotoShop

I am new to PhotoShop and I am having an issue with keeping the background of an image transparent. Every time I save the file to JPG, it converts the transparent background to white. Is there a way to keep the background transparent?

Save the image in a format that supports transparancy, for example PNG. And depending on the quality you wish to achieve, PNG16 is preferred, else PNG8 or the GIF format will be fine.

The JPEG format doesn't support transparancy.

Although better than GIF, I know that there are some issues with browsers for the PNG format, so until things get stable I would advise you to use the GIF format.

The issue is with IE, and there is a simple workaround that works well. The only exception is a workaround for PNG as backgrounds within CSS, which I'm not sure there's a solution for.

GIF is fine, but unsuitable for better quality images (>256 colors + alpha-transparancy).

That worked perfectly... I wish I know before that jpg does not support transparency... I could have saved that hour and a half that I wasted.

    Thanks!!!
