Building a new website?

I would like that some good people could tell me how to start from scratch while building a web site. What are the basics to get my website looking decent as quick as possible?

Basics:


Keep it simple, if it doesn't add value even though it looks "cool," dont add it.

Keep the colors to a minimum, great help at www.visibone.com

I usually start with a 9 cell table.

be creative

if you need style help, look through magazines or look at MTV advertisements

Further to the excellent previous reply (wishing I'd followed it myself) I'd like to add that whatever you put on that page/site.. try to make it of your own creation.. be it the animations, the java scripts or just simply the layout.. there is nothing more eye catching than the unusual.. and if it's done with own talent and effort.. then there is a bigger chance of getting a response (be it good or bad) than a page desinged just like all the others we see all over the place.
