    Not again. . .

    Hello Guys,

I just received an email from unknown address. When I tried to read that email, a download sort of dialog box appeared and disappeared within seconds. Since then my e-mail client is sending email to every website I have visited and I am visiting with the same content that would make the owner's email also affected.

Can anyone tell me how do I get rid of this virus ? I even never heard about it.

I just got an email bounced back which I never send:

    sinecure@pixeljunction.com
This message has been rejected because it has
    a potentially executable attachment "stuff.MP3.pif"
This form of attachment has been used by
    recent viruses or other malware.
If you meant to send this file then please
package it up as a zip file and resend it.
Is that giving you guys any hint?

download norton antivirus - if you have it, get latet virus updates and do a full system scan

also, i highly recommend buying it if you don't already own it - one of the best purchases i ever made

Looks like it could be something like Virus Name: W95/MTX.gen@M

A good Anti-Virus program should pick it up.

I received your e-mail as well Omair, and I did not execute the attachement. I clicked away the dialog box, without opening the attachement I presume. Does this mean my system is clean, or was it executed anyway?

I got an attachment from you too, Omair..but I got it through Mail2Web, so the attachment didn't open automatically. Besides I was using a defunct college computer and its probably full of viruses anyway

I just didnt know if you knew you had this virus on your computer, so I PM'ed you to warn you but since you already know..I just hope you've got some good antivirus software on your computer, like Norton or McAfee.

Either quit using Outlook Express. (I am assuming that is what you are using) or stop opening emails from ppl you don't know.

Eudora is a great program. FAR more powerful, and NOT prone to these nasty virus'

Unfortunetly, the email with the virus attached is usually from someone you do know as it sends emails to everyone in your address book.
The trick is to be cautious of ANY attachment no matter what email program you use and have a good anti-virus program.

Omair sounds like you have he NIMDA virus, are you running IIS on your PC also?

I have to add my 2 cents in about Outlook and Outlook express. I have been a systems Admin for the last 5 of my 10 years in IT, and blaming outlook and outlook express for infected systems is rather crazy, yes virus come from emails but if you have a good scanner and use SMART sense with email then you should be fine.

I have users that get 10 emails from the same person and they open every one of them (HELLO) signal here , it really comes down to being smart and using common sense with emails, if you don't know what the file is that some one is sending you don't open the email. Also stop using the preview pane and that will solve a lot of issues also.

Just my thoughts on it. I see this issue all the time here with people blaming Outlook and Outlook Express.
