    Site Review: Fix-It.org

    Site: http://www.fix-it.org

Description - User submitted content for other users. We offer non-biased computer hardware reviews, news, and tutorials in an industry plagued by biased reviews. The user-submitted content is voted on weekly, and top content is professionally edited by the site-staff, and then submitted to the front page.

This is a great way for users to build an online portfolio of published works to get a start in product reviewing at a professional level. We are currently backbuilding content to anticipate an aggressive marketting campaign come this November. We would just hate to launch with little to no content.

The site also features a user-updatable glossary. This will soon tie into the user accounts, so when you browse users, you will be able to view all glossary submissions and articles. This will give you a good look at the writing level of individual users. User may link to these articles for references, or even job interviews.

    http://glossary.fix-it.org is the glossary location.

Site was created in notepad / dreamweaver.
    Uses php, html, java, images.
Image creation - illustrator and photoshop cs.

    Known issues:
For IE, the heading text on the main site is buggy.

    Questions or comments please.

I am noticing a lack of focus on the page. The text is fairly small and everything is just kind of crammed in together. My eye goes to the products in the center of the page and down a bit, but I basically lose sight of everything else. I'm personally a fan or slightly more open and airy layouts, I think if helps viewers find things on the site much more easily which results in them staying longer.

Thumbs up Very helpful for ordinary people who wants to understand hardware jargons

When I'm desperately in need to understand the meaning of some
hardware jargons, I will be very grateful to find your site.

I don't even care if it's done in black and white.

It will be better if you also include the meaning of Internet jargons
such as URL, http, and so on.

I tried to click the "advertise on this site" link but I arrived at the
Forum Subscription page. Why? I think you should fix it, right?

arigola, what link did you click exactly? Advertise on this site is a google adwords link. It should work correctly.

More comments about the layout please. If you do not like it, explain how I can improve or fix it. I need to get the development streamlined, and for this, I need lots of feedback.

    chosos,
    Using FireFox...

First thing I notice is that the top of your homepage would benefit from a better focus. I don't know if covering the corner of the Contact link button is good or not. Are you trying to create a sense of depth? Is that a search box under the logo? I might try moving the keyboard image a little right - I had to look thrice to realize what was hiding under there! The monitor at right - is its "blue cross" in reference to something, (besides maybe a monitor that's gone wiggy)? The Sponsor This Site button catches my eye - maybe that's a good thing, but it really draws me.

Next, the gray box below the header looks out of place compared to other elements. The McAfee ad is pretty strong - stands out a lot, and I don't feel the grad is good, (too dark).

Tech News area needs better styling - again looks plain compared to other elements. Ditto for DET@fix-IT.org.

I noticed the site doesn't use a consistent layout (main content area margins).

Opening some (or most) links within the site on new tabs/pages can bother some people who block such events, or get annoyed at multiple browser windows when they'd prefer just one.

Have you tried the Google ads on the right?

I'd agree with the previous comment about a lack of focus - and I think the culprit is the header/top of the homepage. (I think the gray box could go away, and its content integrated with the main content area for a start.)

    hth.

    topher, thanks for the review.

I'll get to work on some of the changes. The search box is part of the logo up there. The image is stuck that way as it is just for looks. The contact on the right is also meant to be that way.

However, the content on the gradient and the news was really good. That stuff I will get to work on. I want the page to tie together and be easily browsed.

It looks good but I don't like the wide open space under your ad. First off it is right smack in the middle fo the page, and secondly its very obvious. You might want to make that more subtle. Other than that I like the techy design and interface... Good luck with it.

    Fonts a little small

    Things I noticed.

Like the color scheme but the text blends into each other. I lose focus also and only see the pictures.
The review layout is very nice. Titles of the items overlap each other when they are multilined.
I bleieve the Site Help section should have a good FAQ section.
You may want to bold the Glossary Keywords.
    Search it. Find it. Win.

You should consider changeing to another host. We have several T3 lines here at work and after 30 seconds of wiating for the site to respond I just hit the back button. I got onto the site earlier, but an unresponsive site will drive away users.

Right now, it's nothing special, try balancing the site more to begin with, especially the main navigation, and the footer need to be redone, it doesn't connect well with the rest of the site. As well, you should consider having a different background color for the left navigation to give the visitors clear impression of what it is, namely a navigation menu. This could also be achieved by using borders around the left menu.
My impression is that you've been too creative in the process of the making the website, maybe because you're learning or want to show off your skills, but as always in webdesign, simplisity works best!

Nice work, Chosos. The content flow is good and that's what it is all about. The design is not quite brilliant looks similar to other websites of the same kind. The links are very blunt. Use hover, change color or something. The inks are killing the content in a way. It looks like the links are all important and the content is just alright. If the links are subdued to a subtler color it would look better.

The header is nicely done. Although, I'd like to have some hover/mouseover effect on the main navigation. The text in the subsequent article pages is a bit small and the spacing between the lines is very short too. You should at least increase the spacing a bit. Just work on those links, the header navigation, the text. Otherwise its all quite fine.

And finally I must say that I loved the 13 Comparisons of Vista vs Tiger article.

Joomla or Mambo, you used, do you? I think your font too small and hard to read with 1024x768. By the way. Good job man.

I like how everything looks below the header. The header to me looks unprofessional compared to the rest of the site. Maybe use a slightly lighter color?
