    Why PHP?

I've often wondered, why is PHP called PHP? My understanding is it is supposed to be short for Hypertext Pre-Processor, which would be HPP.

It stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor - it's what's known as a recursive acronym where one of the initials actually stands for the whole acronym. There's another fact you never really wanted!

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. An acronym that includes the acronym (that is never really defined)? Seems pretty circular, guaranteed to incur some sort of error. Seems like an inherent syntax/logic problem to me. Certainly puts a different spin on what I believe are extremely (absurdly) loose syntax rules in PHP.
Maybe they should rename "recursive acronym" to "change the rules whenever it makes things easier acronym" or "senslessly derived acronym".

it was called that because of one of the following reasons:

    1) some nerd thought it would be hilarious for programmers to look for meanings and reason as to why its not called HPP.....

    2) When they were writing down the name, they typed too fast - is there anyone who hasn;t typed teh instead of the.....

    3) they were dyslexic....

Thank you, but my fire is maybe half as big as yours. Don't take that as a double entendre or anything, though.

Technically you could call it anything...

It could be "XHP" short for "XHP Hypertext Preprocessor"

Recursive acronyms were very popular for a while. Like the GNU project: GNU = GNU's Not Unix.
