Under 18's can't enter into contracts

I've always worked on the prinicipal that under 18's can't enter into legally binding contracts however the one thing I've not been able to work out where this basic fact is set in UK law. I've just had a few kiddies (can you tell its the holidays yet?) saying that its wrong and it did just get me curious

From what I have read and been told, a minor can enter into a contract but without a parent present they do not have to keep that contract. Now, if they claim that they are not a minor and enter into the contract and later you find that they are, they are bound by the contract.
