Getting a 1-800 number??

Anyone know where I can get a 1-800 number? Are they expensive?

I have been contemplating over whether or not to get one or just keep a local number. I plan to start the company local and focusing it around the local area so a local number would be ok correct?

I use Access Line and have been VERY happy with it. Along with a toll-free number you also get very useful services like a mailbox and forwarding system, voicemail, fax and email capabilities, an easy control panel...

Check it out. It's less than $20 per month plus the per minute charge (which isn't that much).

If your desired 800 number is taken, you can alternatively get 888 and 877 numbers, I think. Don't forget 866!

Talk to whoever you use for Long Distance now. You can usually get an 800/etc number that is directed to your regular number and billed to your regular account. Usual cost is about 10-12 cents per minute.

State to State rates are generally around 6c/min. Instate rates vary by state(NC is 12c/min).

If you're already dealing with ATT or MCI, you may be alright with the above posted links, but its possible to get them for less than that, and without a monthly fee!

The program (AccessLine) that I reccommended only has a monthly fee because it is quite a bit different than a basic toll-free number your long-distance company can provide. Any long-distance company (ATT, Sprint, MCI) can provide you with a toll-free number for around 6-8 cents a minute...

AccessLine, which I have been very pleased with, is much more than a toll-free number. It routes calls, has a programmable answering service (you know... "Press 1 for bob, 2 for jane"), can receive faxes and email them to you, has a voicemail box, forwards to ANY number (even cell phones and you can change the number whenever you want) and the best...

When you get a call from an AccessLine number you can forward it from the phone you're on to ANY phone! In the MIDDLE of a call! So if you're in the middle of an important call and you're leaving you can just forward the call to your cell... then when you get around another phone you can forward it there.

So you get far more with the service than you would with a simple toll-free number... and it's only about $16 or $17 more a month.

Sprint's rates if you are a current customer:

$3.00 a month + 20 cents a minute. I think that's kind of high.

I used to have a plan which no longer exists for small businesses with no monthly fee and .08 cents a minute.
