    Arrow Review for student organization

Hellow everyone first off here is the website

    www.sdsurha.com/index2.html

    1. I know it uses a lot of flash... for the top navigation as well as other things. You can comment on the flash but try not to ride my whole site off because of the amount of flash. Thanks... I may change the site with time to use less flash.

    2. If you can check out the Picture and Calendar Section I tried to intergrate scripts into the site.

    3. The goal of this site is to aware people of events going on (calendar) and have people apply for RHA.

I have some more little changes to make but I hope I can get some feedback. Thanks
    Thanks Sitepoint!

I like the top part of the site (especially the logo which is very good), but the lower I get, the more things I'd change...
For example - the calendar in the background doesn't work well.
The "News Announcements!" (?!) and other sections could be organized better - how about pushing them all into 1single column, one under the other and leaving the left side for thumbnail, images, icons to grab the attention?

Thank you for the kind comments. That always feels good to hear that.

Hmmm thats not a bad idea. I am actually thinking about adding more to the page and have thumbnails to other parts of the site I want to push.

I am thinking about having Thumbnail with text to the right. Then thumb with text to the right. till the end. I plan to do that right above the Questions header and Useful Links. That will add some attention especially to other sections I want to push.

    other comments?

I agree with Varelse on the logo, it is very nice.
I think the calendar background image makes the text slightly harder to read and if you where to remove it the impact on the design would be small.
The feedback form needs to be worked on as well as it looks messy, there needs to be more spacing between the form elements and I recommend letting the default style of the form elements being shown to avoid confusion and in turn improve the usability of the website.
Overall I think its a great website except for the things I've mentioned.

I put the calendar there because I really wanted to emphasis that these events listed were directly FROM the calendar that they can view... and hopefully seeing the visual they will be motivated to view the calendar. Do you think that emphasis is unnecessary?

The idea of the form is that it can be used for a quick question or feedback. I didnt want it to take much room.

I dont quite understand " I recommend letting the default style of the form elements being shown to avoid confusion"

Can you reword that? Sorry for my confusion.

Also... There is kind of 2 logos on that page... The top RESIDENCE HALL ASSOCIATION spelled out and then the "bridge logo" with the url. Which one are you guys saying is good?

    ----
edit: I think I know what you mean about default style now. The defaut look to the form so people go "O look its a form"

Hmm I like the look to my form... but ur right... it may cause confusion... hmm looks or clarity...

    Thanks Sitepoint!

The site looks wondeful you did a great job with the menus.

The calendar in the background on the front page needs to be taken off or needs to be lighter so it's not super distracting, also with your pictures if you don't plan on adding more pictures it seems kind of silly to have all of those categories (random, last viewed, etc) for 1 picture in the category, but if there is going to be more in there it works.

The red black bar on the main page would be a lot better if it did it once and faster it's kind of distracting.

Thanks and I see that the calendar seems to be distracting... I will lighten or figure out if I need it.

I do plan on having more images in those albums so just wait...

I have and idea for the red and black bar that will be less distracting.

    Thanks!

Not bad, alot going in the fram however, if you could take some text out and give it more space it would be nice.

For me, at the top, it appears cluttered. There is a lot of information to take in and I'm thinking the animation only adds to this - perhaps reduce the amount of images that are there, it may help with that.

Finally, the big flash animations on each page serve mostly to distract and push the actual content down out of view, I'd reduce the heigh of them.

One thing I did notice was on the main page, maybe make the contact us form a white background in the text fields? Maybe its just me but it just doesnt seem right.

Thanks I built this last year during the summer and now I am reworking it to be more automated and survive after I leave. The calendar, Pictures site, News Blog on the home page gets updated and they can be updated by anyone.

CLKeenan - That is pretty funny your on RHA. I was president last year and now I am just still helping out. Did you go to the NACURH conference in Berkely?

Really nice site. I particularly like the header. I do feel that the calendar is distracting - I found myself clicking on it to see if it was a real working calendar. The only other thing I noticed was that the white headings were hard to read on such a light background.

very nice site there's a lot to it and it's nicely organised
most pages are dislaying fine - good layout...
    great work

just a few points for improvement maybe:
    > (I love flash) - but it seems a little too much movemment on the page all the time... your effects are nice and subtle - just a few too many of them in my opinion
    > the calendar page falls out of the frame on my machine (firefox, mac)
    > I agree with the calendar background image, bit to confusing

    good luck

first impression: clean and looks like it belongs to an RA type of deal.
nice flash, etc. at the top, and it was definitely not too long, which was great.
your site layout is clean and organized, as it should be, again, with this type of organization you are running.
looks similar to other similar RA organizations, which isn't a bad thing.
    good job!

    + good site design
    + good structure.
    + Nice naviagtion

    - The box, Upcoming events, doesn't looks good. color is to lights and the text is not corrently formatted.
    - Change the white text into anonther colour because White is not good readable.

    A little off balance

Like the color selection but a few things I noticed.

    • I keep getting "Click to activate this control" on the flash items (IE6, xp pro)

    • The images in the top seem to overwhelm the rest of the page. the bottom seems bland compared to the top.

    • The Calendar text blends together. Maybe bold the date to make it stick out.

    • Same thing with the announcements section.

    • The events main page should have the current events without having to click again to get to them

Sweet template for your off pages. The images on the left balance the site and make it easier to view.
    Search it. Find it. Win.

using IE, I have to click each nav button twice to get it to work. Go find the java script to fix flash in IE. I think the looping of the flash is distracting.

other than that, it looks like any other site out there.

Ya just got the code to fix that. I just updated the home page too so you should be seeing http://sdsurha.com/index.php now after a redirect.
    Thanks Sitepoint!
