the session cookie has no expires time by default, browsers interpret this as "hold onto this cookie until the browser is closed"

the default value for php's garbage collection of session files is 24 minutes. this means that php will not delete any session file that has been modfied/acessed within the last 24min. however, this does not mean that the session file will be deleted once 24 minutes of inactivity has passed. due to the way garbage collection works, it may take 30min, or maybe hours, or maybe days. so thier session file(essentially thier session) may remain in tact for a long time.
