    Any HTML tips about getting recognized by seach engines spiders as a French website?

    <html lang="fr"> maybe ?

    Do I have the change the caracter encoding or the doctype ?

    it's a .com

    .ca can be both french and english btw...How can I optimize it for one language ?

    We should always be using utf-8 now, regardless of language.

    Your site should declare its language as French, and obviously it should contain content in french.

    That's it.

    You could also describe the natural language(s) of the intended audience by using the Content-Language HTTP header.
