    Flat Panel Displays for Designers?

I am tossing up between buying a 19" CRT monitor and a 17" Flat Panel Monitor (which are about the same price and are both Dells) and was wondering what experience others had when using programs such as Photoshop etc. on the Flat Panel LCD.
I have read that they are not ideal for graphics work as you can see the pixellation on the screen and you will see the jagged edges.
    Appriciate any feedback.

i'd love to help and give great advice but heh all i can tell you is that LCD's aren't very reliable reproducers of color... they can't show as great a spectrum of colors in terms of intensity as CRTs

if you decide on getting one, you'd have to go for the high-end models, probably those recommended for graphic professionals...

I have an old LCD. Old in that its 15 inch and I paid $900 for it and got it 3 years ago.

I love it. Its awesome. Its really really bright and clear and saves so much desk space. Once I've owned an LCD I don't think I'd ever go back to CRT.

I've played plenty of high graphics games with it, watched DVDs, it works perfectly. The only part of the screen that shows up weird is the last 1 or 2 pixels on the far right side. They're kinda a little jagged, but everything else is fine.

Colors are fine, clearity is fine, I recommend getting these for anyone.

Previously LCDs (like on Sega's Game Gear) didn't display all that great, but they've come a long way. This one that I got 3 years ago can be looked at from different angles and the color stays constant. At extreme angles it doesn't but then again this one is 3 years old, and at that time it was the cheapest I could find.

Buy an LCD, you won't regret it, and you'll love the desk space.

Oh... its a Proview if you're interested in the brand. One time it died on me but it was still under warranty and fixed free of charge.

I created this thread last summer: http://www.sitepointforums.com/showt...vs+LCD+monitor

If you play games, have plenty of desk space, and want to be able to run high resolutions, go with CRT. It's cheaper and still very good.

If you aren't a gamer, need to save desk space, have some extra money to burn, and don't mind running 1024x768, consider the LCD.

Thanks mjames. It sounds like you went through the same thing as I am now going through! I think I will go with the 19" CRT.
Are you happy with your Dell system? I am looking at the new P4 2ghz beast.
Now I just have to decide if I really need the NVIDIA GEFORCE3 or to save a few hundred dollars and stick with the GEFORCE2!

Yeah, go for the CRT.... well at this stage anyway... i still think the flatscreens have to come down a bit in price vs. quality.

And an extra 2 inches wow... go for it

    Good decision.

I am very happy with my Dell system. Although in the first month or two I had a bunch of nasty, nasty blue screen of deaths which caused me to completed reboot (old version of ZA was the culprit), it has been awesome for me!

Cool! It's going to be great to have a decent monitor for a change.
There is a month wait for the 2ghz P4 so I am going for the 1.9Ghz instead.
