    Evaluating 3rd-party Javascript

Last night I was proudly showing my wife a webpage with a gradient I made using a small jpeg and a background image repeat, and she said it reminded her that she had recently seen an image-free gradient (what can I say? we're two geeks in love) so she sent me the link:

    http://slayeroffice.com/code/gradient/gradient.js

I don't have a use for this particular script - I'm happy with my simpler method - and I usually write my own Javascript anyway, but my question is, when I see some Javascript that does something interesting what's the best way to tell if it's completely kosher, and not playing close to the edge of the language definition, or relying on implementation-specific features, or liable to be a performance hog, cause resource leaks, etc?

    Hi,

Experience really. Read over the ecma standard, look over articles, all these things help gain experience in truly evaluating what will have the best performance. Checking out the javascript forums here and there will help see what's the Wrong Way To Do Things(tm).
