You can look for ready made solutions on cut and paste sites for Javascript, Perl, PHP or ASP. I can't recommend a particular script or technology unless you let me know what your needs and capabilities are.

I will be working on sites (UNIX server) where content is extensive, consisting of lists and sub-lists, articles, etc. In fact, the sites may even be candidates for publishing via database (which is another area I need basics in!).
In the interim, a site search to enable visitors to find specific items/information seem to be a plan.
Check out cgi.resourceindex.com. They have over 1600 PERL scripts that can automate any facet of your site, including several well regarded searching scripts.
For learning about new technologies I suggest you start at www.articlecentral.com. This is a comprehensize site covering articles from all over the internet. For books you might check out Wrox Publishing at www.wrox.co.uk and look at thier extensive list of titles.
